Corporate public policy
focuses, in part, on organizational interaction and
effectiveness, particularly regarding internal and industry-wide issues of
environmental quality and sustainability. An essential element in ensuring
that this process is effective entails having both policy experts
and political experts inside the organization. For this
discussion, analyse the difference between the two. Provide examples of
how each of these positions interact
within the organization.
Every organisation has the objective
of being effective in the market because it contributes significantly to its
success. For being aligned with customers and the industry, firms have
corporate public policies. To make them effective, they also have political
experts and policy experts. Although they appear to be similar to each other,
they are quite different and their roles are also different in a firm. They
play important roles within a firm and can help it in achieving sustainable
advantage in the market.
In general, policy experts helps in
the implementation and even create different rules, standards, norms, policy
frameworks, and regulations for ensuring smooth and effective functioning of
the whole firm. It would not be wrong to say that policy makers tend to
consider the challenges, requirements, and needs of different stakeholders in
mind. In addition to it, they are always thriving to maintain a balance among
these stakeholders. For instance, let’s suppose that there is a firm which
needs to implement a new policy about work in the organisation. It has two
options: going to political experts and the second option is to go to policy
experts. Instead of considering political experts, the firm will consider
policy experts because they are the ones to consider the needs of internal
stakeholders and employees for the implementation of authorities.
Policy experts work along with other
executives and managers to implement suitable policies within organisations to
ensure that there is no resistance from the side of employees and other
stakeholders. Considering the fact that resistance can mean inefficiency and
discord for a firm, policy experts consider it very important to implement only
those policies which can esure success for the firm (Longenecker, et al., 2013).
Meanwhile, political experts tend to
make and formulate strategies with the objective of maintaining healthy
relationships with many other important authorities outside and within the
firm. Political experts establish a power base which commonly offers important
business opportunities to be utilised in the marketplace. In addition to it,
political experts have the knowledge of gaining a favourable image or picture
in the mind-set of government authorities along with other value-based
stakeholders. Ultimately, the firm works to obtain better customers and improved
profitability in the market. These roles and qualities might be carried out by
a group or an individual executive.
For instance, power politics might
be played by a CEO and might as well formulated different strategic objectives
against direct competitors in the market. Actually, employees might also be
appointed with the duty of watching regularly on external environment of the
business for extracting different opportunities and minimising risks which are
involved in future operations of the business. Therefore, it would not be wrong
to say that policy experts and political experts are quite different from each
other because of their roles. While policy experts are mainly concerned with
internal affairs and relationships with internal stakeholders, political
experts are concerned with external stakeholders and maintaining healthy
relationships with them. They ensure that the firm stays competitive and
sustainable in the market and there is a coordination and healthy relationship
between the firm and other external authorities, for instance, they can be
legal authorities of a nation (Sampaio, et al., 2012).
