Climate
change is one of the primary issues faced by policymakers all around the globe
because it is hurting the planet and humans in so many ways. Climate change is
not only a threat to the environment and people, but it is also a major risk
for businesses. However, it is important to understand that opportunities are
also there along with the risks, and if stakeholders are engaged well in the
process, and they are given a perspective where they can understand the
implications of changes in climate change policy, then a better response can be
prepared for the future. The key stakeholders can play a positive part in
handling the situation, and if policymakers and stakeholders can sit together
and cooperate with each other, then the world can expect a better response, as
well as, policy to handle climate change issues. This collaboration between the
policymakers and stakeholders will not only find ways to deal with climate
change issues, but a lot of behavioral changes can be made, which are required
in this regard (Westaway, 2011). In actual, terms, everyone is
influenced by climate change, so everyone is considered a stakeholder, but the
following are some of the key stakeholders in climate change policies:
·
Government Bodies
·
Business Community
·
Civil Society
·
Environmental Organizations
The
above-mentioned stakeholders are categorized as per their importance in this
stakeholder’s analysis. So, the first key stakeholder is Government Bodies all
around the globe. The governments of all countries have a high level of power,
which can be used to make and implement policies. The government has the
resources to take all possible measures in this regard. If the government is
ready to take the initiative in changing the policy towards climate change,
then there is no one stopping them, and they can achieve so much for their own
country, as well as, contributing to the planet. After the government, the
second major key stakeholder for climate change policies is the business
community. The business world has a lot of responsibility on their shoulders as
their business processes and activities can make a positive or negative effect
on the environment. The variety of business are involved in polluting the
environment, as well as, consuming natural resources, and if they understand
the importance of implementing the climate change policies, then results can
get far better than the current ones (Plan A, 2019).
The third most important stakeholder is
civil society. The people living all around the globe are affected by climate
change in one way or the other, which means that they are being the most
concerned party in this regard. The people should be given the awareness that
their choices in daily life can make or break the situation for climate change.
For instance, one good example is using polythene shopping bags, which have
great negative effects on the environment. It is known that these bags are
harmful, and even so many governments have banned its use, but its illegal use
is continued. The civil society should respect the policy to preserve the
climate from harmful effects. The last key stakeholder in climate change
policies is environmental organizations. There are so many non-profit
organizations and interest groups working for the protection of the
environment. They should be taken into confidence by the policymakers so that
they can help to spread awareness across the globe by using different channels
of communication. It is vital to understand that all of these key stakeholders
have their own importance in the policy of climate change, and efforts are
needed from all of them to keep things on the right track to get desired
results for a bright future (Böhringer & Löschel, 2012)
