From the NVC video, the 21st Century
definitely includes non-verbal communication. We can see some of essential
examples in the workplace. Non-verbal communication is really included in the
workplace, for example such as interviewing or negotiation. The reason is
because non-verbal communication which presented by body language such as
gesture, face expressions, how you shake hands, tone of your voice, etc. could
effect on the messages that you deliver. Thus, non-verbal communication will
also influence on any negotiation that you have to make throughout the conversation
(Westland, 2015).
In the other hand, non-verbal communication could be not
included in the 21st century in the context of making formal
documents or agreements of any negotiation, since we only need to include
formal languages into these type of conversations.
However, in our opinion, we need to learn about
non-verbal communication since we will have to interact with people everywhere,
not only in society, working place, everywhere. Therefore, we need to learn and
understand about non-verbal communication so that we could adjust ourselves in
presenting non-verbal communications into our daily activities. Since some of
the non-verbal communication might have a different meaning for different people,
we also need to understand on which type of non-verbal communication that we
make are able to give negative meaning for others, so that we will not make any
mistakes in our conversation. For example, the tone of our voice that we find
it normal might able to make other people feeling negative or even hurt. Thus,
we need to learn on adjusting this into our daily communication to prevent
ourselves from getting a negative image in front of other people (Source: Video
PPT: Nonverbal Communication & Rooshikumar Pandya).
Non-verbal communication is really essential in a
business context, especially in negotiation processes. Since we know that
negotiation processes will engage people with different opinions to negotiate
those opinions and get an agreement. Therefore, we definitely don't want to
make any mistakes in presenting our non-verbal communication, which will effect
the negotiation as well (Peale, 2019).

A. What is
an example in this video you found interesting about unique problems that
underlie cross-cultural communication? Why did your group choose that
particular example?
This video is
really an amazing video with an interesting topic as well. One of the examples
presented by Prof. Rooshikumar Pandya in this video that we found interesting
is about the different perception of crossing legs for the American men and for
Arab’s men. As Prof. Rooshikumar Pandya said that, in the Arab world, showing
the soul of your foot to other people is considered as a big insult. The
Professor also explained that, with crossing their legs in front of Arab’s men,
the American men could insult or even hurt them without even say any single words.
We have chosen this example because we have seen that it is an interesting
thing to understand on how the style of crossing legs could have different
meanings as one of the types from non-verbal communication across the countries
in all over the world (Youtube.com, 2011).
Another thing
that we found interested and agree from this video is the interested words from
Prof. Rooshikumar Pandya when he told us to: “Learn to observe before you
learn to interpret.” The professor has really taught us that if we meet
people from other countries along with different cultures that they have, then
we have to observe their non-verbal communication so that we can interpret and also
adjust with it.
The reason is
obvious, as we acknowledged that there are many different cultures that we can
find within various countries across the world. Since it might be difficult for
us to understand their language as verbal communication, then we could try to
understand their non-verbal communication. For example, if we will make any
business with people from another country, then we definitely do not want to
mistakenly present some of the non-verbal communications that might normal for
us, but instead, have negative meanings for them. Therefore, as the Professor
said, we must learn to observe first so that we could learn to interpret (Rocci & Saussure, 2016).
