Introduction
of BP wins green light
for Oman shale gas project
BP Oman is a major investor in Oman since 2007. In the
Middle East, BP has a long history of the exploration of oil and gas. It
is considered as the pioneer in the production of tight gas, and bringing
technology. One of the Middle East’s largest unconventional gas resources – the
Khazzan field was developed by BP Oman. This company has a rich history of
heritage brands as well, that includes, Amoco, ARCO/ampm, Sohio, Castrol, and
Aral. BP Oman has a very rich history and to fulfill its social
responsibilities towards the society it has established a cinema in the capital
Muscat. In this report we intend to elucidate how the world is changing and now
the education of students is not limited to a classroom only, there are
tablets, computers, educational trips, educational movies etc. Now-a-days,
education is much more than just books, like in the past movies and going to
cinemas was just for leisure purposes. These days if you want to educate kids,
you need to give them much more than just books. Cinemas are a great way to
educate them and also at the same time they are having fun, as they do not have
to read books to get a concept, they can simply see things happening in front
of them, rather than just reading about it. BP Oman which is a major investor
and a company with deep roots in Oman has acknowledged its responsibility in
this regard and has established a cinema for educational purposes; they also
have it in their plans to extend it for entertainment purposes as well. To
extend it further, a marketing plan would be needed and currently they are
working on it.
Interpreting
the Task of
BP wins green light for Oman shale gas project
In this report
we are going to talk about the unconventional ways of education that are more
in demand these days and also are highly effective in learning. Technology has
taken over every field in this modern age same is the case with the education
sector. Now the traditional and orthodox methods of teaching are no longer in
use. A way by which technology is used for educational purposes is by showing
educational movies. This is a great way of education, as children can learn
something more comprehensively by watching it happen in front of their eyes,
than just by reading about it. Another advantage of this is that it also does
not feel boring to students as they are having fun watching a movie. While this
method of education also has critics but its pros outweigh its cons. BP Oman, also
wants to extend the cinema’s audience and open it for entertainment movies as
well. A retail marketing plan is needed for that purpose, it will help create
awareness among people and increase its sales. (Carroll,
2009)
PESTLE
Analysis: A PESTLE Analysis is done in the following of how the technology
has impacted the educational sector. It focuses on how the political, economic,
social, technological, legal and environmental factors would work with these
technological ways of education. The Omani company that sponsored this project
also intends to extend it for entertainment purposes that would definitely be a
great recreation for the people. (Lucintel)
Political
Factor: The political system of Oman is absolute monarchy. The
Sultan holds the title of not only the Head of State but also the Head of
Government. This head has influence over military, defense, foreign affairs,
finance etc. So politics is definitely a great influence over every aspect in
Oman. Educational sector is also not without this influence, the educational
sector of Oman went through a reengineering in the 1970s. It went through
significant developments in qualitative and quantitative terms. The high
standards of learning and education were ensured for the students. So it can be
said that the system of education is quite good overall, but as there is always
room for improvement, but as the government of Oman seems serious about the
educational sector so we can expect that this new educational method would be
welcomed there. Cinemas are not only a good way of education but they can be
used for revenue generation as well. The cinemas in Oman are not much developed
and a few films have been shot in Oman only. So cinemas should also be looked
for revenue generation.
Economic
Factor: The economy of Oman has increased by 2.6 points and
has showed significant improvements in all areas that are relevant to the rule
of law. The rank of country is 6th in the Middle East and North African
region among the 14 countries. The GDP growth has been a steady one in the past
half a decade but certainly not a remarkable one. Improvements in the economic
freedom would be a good effort for the economic boost. One thing that Oman
needs to focus on is the education sector, the better the education is the more
learned individuals there would be and that would certainly help in the
economic growth. Also cinemas are a good source of revenue and Oman has not
developed much in that field by working on the entertainment sector, a good
income can be generated.
Social
factor: In the past decade the states of Arab and Oman have
been through an enormous change and transformational process. The change was
more in terms of economic development but the social change was not very much
evident. The society of Oman has taken a very careful path and has not let the
external factors influence its cultural values. They have adopted the most
beautiful parts of the Gulf philosophy that includes “customs and mannerisms”.
The change has certainly came but it had been a slow process. The Omanis now are now more open to change,
whether it is in the society or in technology. Educational technology will
definitely be accepted by them as a good change as it is education and
entertainment together.
Technology:
Technological
advancement is not a want it’s a need in today’s world. Any nation with a dream
to move ahead has no way to do it but through technological advancement. There
are many changes that the sultanate is going through at this time and it is the
time that countries like Oman and other Gulf countries can excel in technology
and can make their mark in the world. The government is also encouraging technological
ventures. Companies who have the idea to introduce a new technology are being
incentivized by the government. Cinemas are a great way to allow technology to
enter in daily lives through a learning process.
Legal
Factor: In Oman most of the law is around the Islamic Sharia.
There are strong laws and regulations in Oman. However they are constantly
amended and updated to provide a flexible and up-to-date legal framework for
the business. There are commercial courts for the adjudication of business
disputes. The government of Oman is taking all the measures to promote the ease
of business. Cinemas are considered a new kind of business in Oman, and it
would be particularly welcomed. As it would not only produce revenue but also
provides a good source of recreation and education at the same time.
Environmental
Factor: The environment of Oman is business oriented, and
business is suitable there. The amendments in laws and regulations are
continuously made to make the environment more feasible. As the BP Oman company
is already an established company and is a major investor in Oman so there
would not be any problems for it there.
SWOT
Analysis (Al Salmi, 2015)
Strengths:
The
position of BP Oman is already enough strengthened in Oman. It is a major investor;
it has a heritage history. It is concerned with the oil and gas industry which
is the main business in Oman. BP Oman would not have much difficulty in
establishing a new business there.
Weaknesses:
Previously
BP Oman was involved in the business of oil and gas extraction. The
entertainment sector is a new sector for it. It is presently unaware of the
pros and cons of this business.
Opportunities:
Cinemas
and entertainment is the sector which is not much developed in Oman. So this
sector has a huge potential if properly taken.
Threats:
The
threat to this venture could be that it is not much explored, so the public
reaction to this could be of any kind and that is hard to predict.
Conclusion
of BP wins green light
for Oman shale gas project
Cinemas are a great technique to develop the interest
of children towards education. If they are also opened for the general public
they can be a great source of revenue too. BP Oman can become successful in
this sector by adequate marketing efforts. Create awareness among people that
how cinemas can be used for educational as well as entertainment purposes. That
would ensure its success in this sector.
