Executive Summary of Business Ethics
A
person, who is an entrepreneur and starts a business, is the visionary. He has
a clear approach and his ideas are impressive but the employees are the ones
who will lead his business to success. The employees are the ones who are
carrying that vision forward; they are the ones who are giving their own ideas
to strengthen the business. Their issues should be addressed forthwith and a
comfortable environment should be provided that would let them work
efficiently. In any organization, the code of ethics shows the values of the
business, it has three parts. Ethics in a business can be personal,
professional, and corporate; all three are related and provides guidance in
different parts of the business. Ethics of any business are the depiction of
its culture, they should be given due importance.

Introduction of Business Ethics
Employee
engagement is a fundamental concept. It is not the same as employee
satisfaction. It is the extent to which employees are passionate about their
jobs, their commitment to the organization they are working for and the
discretionary effort they put into their work. Employee engagement is the
workplace approach that results in creating the right conditions for all the
members of the organization, to give their best every day. It is about being
committed to the organization’s goals and values, and to contribute to the
organizational success, and having the sense of the self-growth as well. Our
main objective here is to identify the HR practices implemented in Omantel and
how they link employee engagement in the company. Different HR practices are
considered in the analysis for Omantel with the consideration of ethical
business conduct. The selected company apply different ethics theories that are
incorporated with the employee engagement. Conclusively, the mechanism is identified
to understand ways utilized by Omantel to overcome the employees related
issues.
Importance of
Employee Engagement
Employee engagement is
the driver of performance. The employees who are engaged with the company look
at the whole company, they understand the purpose of their company, and strive
to prove themselves better for the company. In this way they are able take
better decisions. Organizations who have a work force who is totally engaged
can easily perform its competitors. Organizations with an engaged workforce are
able to recover from recessions quickly, their earning per share is also better
than others in the same industry. When it comes to growth and innovation,
engagement of employees make all the difference. (lumen
learning).
Omantel use number of human resource theories that induce impact on the
knowledge management, employee performance, and employee capabilities to reach
the goals. The theories applied by Omantel includes development theory,
strategic human resource management theory, and theory of organizational
culture development.
Components of
Employee Engagement
Primarily
there are two factors that derive the employee engagement. These factors are
based on the statistical analysis and are also supported by the research.
Engagement with the Organization
This
component measures the engagement of employees with the senior management and
the organization, it also measures how employees feels about their senior
management in Omanlet. It is basically concerned with the trust, respect,
fairness and values of the organization, an employee should have confidence in
the values of the organization.
Engagement with the
Manager
HR
management of Omantel consider strategies that can be used to obtain the
engagement of employees with their supervisors directly. It includes, feeling a
sense of value, being treated fairly, receiving feedback and direction from the
manager. Having a strong working relationship with the manger which is based on
mutual respect, is also included in engagement with the manager.
Employee Engagement
Dynamics
It
means to identify the key driver of engagement among employees. Then comes the
next step which is to take actions on the results. An understanding of drivers
of engagement and disengagement is required. The planning of the activities
that would increase or decrease the engagement level would be done. In most of
the companies the drivers of engagement are of similar nature, but the specific
concerns and the importance level are unique and specific for every company,
and they are even different for the different department within the same
company. All the HR functions of Omantel has been re-structured and
re-engineered and now becoming integral to the ambitious future plans in the

series of HR led initiatives are particularly designed to increase the
engagement of employees. This increases the business development and since 1970
Omantel obtained 51 per cent stake.
Level of Priority of Business Ethics
In
this we see what statistical patterns are followed across all departments in
the organization; this will determine which items are having an impact on the
engagement in the engagements of the groups. Items that would score low and
that have strong link to the engagement are those areas where the change
initiatives and engagement strategy should be focused. the company provides mobile
telephony, fixed line and internet access as free of cost for the employees and
definitely there is no content on the laurels.
Virtual Focus Group of Business Ethics
In
this, the employees are directly asked questions about what problems do they
have and how do they suggest to improve them. Once the problematic area is
identified then that area can be easily worked on and improvements can be made.

ethical businesses a code of conduct is instituted by businesses to support the
mission.

Respects for
Employees and Customers
Ethics
and respect come together. In an ethical business the employees are treated
with respect and they are treated fairly and as an equal. The feedback of
customers is respected and their needs are taken into account. In an ethical
business a vendor is respected by doing payments on time and doing transactions
on fair prices. In an ethical business the environment is kept clean and the
social responsibility of the business is fulfilled. The reputation of Omantel

business is reliable and dependable in all situations and vendors know this
fact and remain loyal to the business.

interest in business activities and will work more passionately.
Ethics in Business

business ethics the appropriate business policies and practices regarding the
potentially controversial subjects that including, corporate governance,
insider trading, bribery, discrimination, corporate social responsibility and
fiduciary responsibilities, are studied. The ethics in business are often
guided by the law, but sometimes the basic guidelines are provided by business
ethics that a business can choose to follow for the attainment of public
approval. The corporate government defined the appropriate processes,
mechanisms, and policies. All these induce work under the defined ethics and
ensure the growth of Omantel. The corporate governance is founded to be based
on the key principles such as roles and responsibilities, interest of other no
shareholding stakeholders, transparency, and shareholding.
Types of Business
Ethics
Following
are the types of ethics followed in business.
1. Personal
responsibility
2. Representative
or official responsibility
3. Personal
loyalties
4. Corporate
responsibilities
5. Organizational
loyalties
6. Economic
responsibilities
7. Technical
morality
8. Legal
responsibility
Personal Responsibility
It
is related to the personal code of ethics of a man. A man is required to behave
honestly according to business ethics.
A
morally responsible person knows which values should be practiced in any
particular situation and what importance they hold for the business.
Representative or
Official Responsibility
A
manger’s actions depict his position or his role for the business. A manger has
to abide by the rules and regulations of the business, because his ethics will
be followed by the subordinates, so he is obliged to show the best possible
ethics.
Personal Loyalties
of Business Ethics
Sometimes
the responsibilities on a personal level get so strong that the interest of the
organization is put aside. This personal
level of loyalty might be from a subordinate to his superior or a superior’s
towards his subordinate.
Subordinate to superior
loyalty
If
a subordinate is loyal to his superior beyond a reasonable level than It would
be harmful for the organization as the subordinate would turn a blind eye to
any wrong doings of his superior.
Superior to Subordinate
of Business Ethics
Same
is the case with the loyalty of a superior towards his subordinate, if a
superior gives preferences or perks to an employee just because of his personal
likings and not on the performance basis, than this thing would not be
tolerated by other employees for long and would become a matter of conflict for
the business. Omantel is aimed to achieve highest long term returns for the
shareholders and value all these to the stakeholders by operating transparently
and ethically under the subject of sustainability and growth in Oman.
Corporate
responsibilities of
Business Ethics
Every
person has some moral responsibilities towards the society he lives in. as the
corporations are artificial persons so they too have the same responsibility.
Companies should make sure that their activities are safe for the environment
and are not the cause of any hazard for the society.
Organizational Loyalties
of Business Ethics
Sometimes
the loyalties of employees are so strong for the organization that they do not
even care for their own personal interests. The board and management of Omantel
is focused to ensure that company is adhering high standards of ethical
corporate governance. The board review and assess all the governance structures
and processes that ensure international practices.
Economic Responsibility
of Business Ethics
Economic
responsibility refers to the responsibility of the business towards the
economy. The organization must make contribution to the society it is operating
in, he should contribute to the general welfare of the society and promote
charities.
Technical Morality
In
any country an organization can work in the technological sector to the extent
of technological advancements in that society. A manger with technical
knowledge will not make a compromise on the quality of the products.
Legal Responsibility
of Business Ethics
Legal
environment provides the framework according to which the organization has to
work. An ethically responsible business will abide by the rules and regulations
of the business.
Ethical Theories of Business Ethics
Ethical
theories make the foundation of the decision making process, when ethics are in
play. These theories guide the individuals in taking decisions relevant to
different scenarios. There are four different categories of ethical theories.
Deontology of Business Ethics
It
is that class of ethical theories that states that people should follow the
rules and regulations when taking a decision where ethics are relevant. This
means that a person will fulfill his duty or responsibility towards the society
or an individual, because fulfilling one’s own responsibility is what ethics
demand. A deontologist is a person who will fulfill the promise that he did to
a friend and also will follow the rules of the society. Consistent decisions
will be expected from a person who follows the theory of deontology. The
dynamic strategies are developed in Omantel to improve the services. the
services are considered as international, local and regional. The annual code
of conduct provides results and details for governance and management. The
comprehensive strategies are developed that recognize all business practices.
Utilitarianism
of Business Ethics
This
theory is based on the ability of a person to predict the consequences of an
action. A person who is the follower of the utilitarian theory will make that
decision that will be in the best interest of everyone. This theory has further
two types, Act Utilitarianism and Rule Utilitarianism. Act Utilitarianism,
describes a person who will act in the best interest of everyone, even if he
has to put aside his own personal gains, his acts will be for the betterment of
every person. It would not take into account the laws even if they are not
beneficial to the society.
Rule
Utilitarianism, takes guidance from the laws and is concerned with the fairness
of acts. This rule also seeks to benefit the society but through the just and
fair means it do not permit to subside laws to benefit others.
Rights of Business Ethics
The
ethical theories that are based on rights, give the highest priority to rights
and protect the rights of the people of the society. Since rights have the
endorsement of a large number of people they are considered to be correct. The
rights may be bestowed upon others by the individuals if they have the
resources and abilities to do so. A complication in this theory is that one
must know what the actual meaning of rights in any society is. The determination
must be done of what rights a society wants to give to its citizens.
Virtue of Business Ethics
In
this theory an individual is judged based on his character rather than his
action, that may be deviated from his or her normal behavior. When rating an
unusual and irregular behavior that is considered to be unethical a person’s
morals, reputation and motivation are taken into account. One weakness of this
theory is that is does not take into account the moral change in a person’s
character. (Larry

Employee related
issues of Business Ethics
When
people work together in a place issues will happen naturally, because the
natures of people are different and so the ethics and morals are different.
Issues are sure to happen, some of the workplace issues are discussed below.
i.
Interpersonal conflict: when people work
together, conflicts arise. These should be solved and a code of conduct should
be implemented in the work place.
ii.
Communication problems: an employee who is
new in the organization and is also shy, might have a lot of problem in
communicating with other employees and the employer. This communication problem
will make the employee fall behind others.
iii.
Gossips: gossips are common among men and
women equally, they waste a lot of time. Employees who gossips leave their work
incomplete and waste their time gossiping which is not in the interest of the
business.
iv.
Bullying: bullying of new comers from the
fellows and sometimes senior staff is a very serious issue.
v.
Harassment: this cause is such that it
would cause a best employee to leave the job or lower down his performance to
zero. This is more common among women than men.
vi.
Discrimination: employees might feel
discriminated, when they are not treated equally. An employer might give perks
to one employee without any extra ordinary performance shown and the other will
then naturally feel discriminated.
vii.
Low motivation: an employee might not feel
the motivation to do the work, it might be due to getting no reward for the
performance or that the environment of the work place is such that it do not
motivates the employees to work efficiently or give their best.
viii.
Performance issues: an employee might not
be able t give the best performance, he might be lacking training or it could
be due to some personal issues. Whatever the cause it will affect the
performance of the employee.
ix.
Poor job fit: sometimes it might happen
that the job an individual is doing do not fit to his capabilities, or it might
be that he was suitable for some better position and the jobs he got was below
his caliber. All of these things cause a problem and that results in anxiety
and other issues.
x.
The people management programs are
developed and implemented in Omantel that consists of series of HR led
initiatives and they increase employee engagement. The issues observed for
employees are related to proper management and impact on driving process of
business.
Solution of Employee
Related Problems
The
problems of employees should be solved and the work environment they are given
should be made comfortable enough so that the employees can work together easily,
and give their best efforts to the business. Following are the ways in which
the problems should be solved
Insisting on
Professional Behavior
Insist
the employees to show a professional behavior during work, regardless of the
problems with the coworkers. The employers need to set a standard for
professional behavior that would help in minimizing the interpersonal issues of
the employees. In this way employees would know that a very professional
behavior is expected of them and they should not waste time in conflicts
Refer employees to HR
department
It
is better to refer the employees who are facing some serious issues or are
getting affected badly to the human resource department. They may also be sent
to a local agency for counseling. For instance, an employee who is facing a
high level of stress due to family problems might be referred to a community
center where he would get the necessary support to tackle the issue and then he
would be able to work efficiently for the company.
Separate Discussion
A
separate discussion might be initiated with an employee who is facing
difficulty in getting along. The employer can listen to the problem or conflict
that the employees might have and then resolve it by talk.
Emphasis on
Behavioral Change
Emphasize
the employees to change the behavior and show a professional attitude. If an
employee’s performance is getting affected by the problem an empathetic dear
would be a great help also provide him the resources if possible to tackle the
problem. The employee too have to understand that he must also change his
behaviors that are affecting his performance because in the end the business is
getting affected by this.
Establishing a reward
system
By
establishing a system of rewards, for the high performers the employees would
be motivated to give the best possible efforts to their work.
Conclusion of Business Ethics
In
the above discussion we saw that there are the behaviors that promote an
employee to work, and the ethical practices that would encourage an employee to
work practices. From the above discussion we get to know that for an employee
to work efficiently for a business he should be given incentives like a
favorable work environment, motivation. For an employee to feel an engagement
towards his work he should be made known his importance for the organization.
Knowing his worth for the business will make him feel worthy and that will
drive his performance. The problems that employees encounter during their work
should be resolved in time so that their performance does not get affected and
the business runs smoothly.
