Sulphur is very much
important in the industrial processes that are utilized in the functions of
industrial work in the economy. Sulphur is used to production of sulphuric acid
which is used on the large scale in the manufacturing of the fertilizers. It is
also important in the preparation of detergents, pigments and fibers as well as
in the storage batteries. It is also used in the making of paper and several
products that are used in our routine life.
Applications
of Sulphur
1. At the point when sulfur consumes and burn on
heat, it produces sulfur dioxide, a noxious gas. At one time this gas was
utilized in New York to disinfect structures harboring irresistible maladies.
2. The
utilization of consuming sulfur for fumigation started a few thousand years
ago. In Homer's 'The Odyssey' which is around 2800 years of age, Odysseus says,
"Bring sulfur, old medical attendant that washes down all contamination,
and bring me fire, that I may clean the house with sulfur.
3. Sulfur
is most likely to be accepted to have been a segment of 'Greek Fire,' a weapon
like a flamethrower utilized by the Byzantine Empire and it is used in the
flaming of the infections.
4. The
primary formula for black powder, containing saltpeter, sulfur and carbon to
make carbon paper that is being used in the printing.

Show
the ion formation of Sulphur and ion formation of the metal you have
selected, and the reaction between them
Do the following:
1. State the group of each element
2. Show the ions formation
3. Show the reactions between them and name the compound
Sulphur is activated with different kinds of
metals that are considered as active metal and it could be sulphide ion according
to the following formula:
16 K(s)
+S8(s) 8 K2S(s)
This is not based on the single product that
could be attained by the reactions, there are different kinds of polysulphide
ions that are charge of -2 and could produce different kinds of numbers in the
atoms of sulphur in the chain of ions.
And the name of the compound is Ionic compound.
B.
List at least 3 applications for
the compound and explain the role of the compound
There are three compounds;
·
Metal + Metal = Metallic Compound.
·
Metal + Non-Metal = Ionic compound.
·
Non-Metal + Non-Metal = Covalent compound
So, we have sulphur and metal; whereas sulphur is non-metal;
So we have Metal + Non-Metal = Ionic compound
Least 3 applications for the compound
·
In different cases the ionic compound involving
Barium chloride which could be used to create the firework where it release the
green colored explosion.
·
The solid ionic compounds also used as the paint
pigmentation for the resistance of organic solvents.
·
Several ionic compounds could excite the natural
hormones and also allows the synchronization of plant development.
Role of Compound
The ionic bonds are significant due to the allows the synthesis of the unique
organic compounds,
3A. Show the ion formation of Sulphur
and ion formation of the nonmetal you have selected, and the reaction between
them
Do the following:
1. State the group of each element
The selected
non-metal is Carbon; and the group of sulphur is 16 in the periodic table and the
group of carbon is 14 in periodic table.
2. Show the ions formation
·
When sulphur receives the two electron then it
ionized and becoming an ion by the 2-charge.
·
Whereas the carbon does not really from ions,
because the carbon atoms have 6 protons in the nuclei and the 6 electrons
orbiting it.
3. Show the reactions between them and name
the compound
And
the name of the compound is covalent compound.
B) List at least 3 applications for the compound and explain the role of the
compound
·
Every kind of fuel we used in pour daily life is
formed due to the covalent bonds between the constituent of element substances.
·
Most of clothes that we wear are consist of
covalent compounds
·
Most of foods which is used for sustaining the
life and formed due to formation of covalent compound
Role of Covalent compound
Covalent
compounds are significant because most of carbon molecule interact by the covalent
bonding.
