INTRODUCTION of Tourism refers to temporary visits

outside their normal living places or work or residence
Tourism refers to temporary visits or movement of people from one
place to another as a destination which is outside their normal living places
or work or residence. Not only the movement of people, but also their need of
facilities and activities change during their visit to other new places. Hence
the tourism industry consists of many factors as providing luxuries, businesses
and comfortable services to be entertained by the customers in best manner as
they directly or indirectly affect the whole industry.
Tourism has been engaging into many fascinating activities which
have made it emerge out as a rapidly growing industry for many countries all over
the world. Although the world had to face many wars yet the countries revive
back and the first thing, they always promote is their tourism industry which
also provides many economic benefits to states. The industry worldwide is very
much optimistic that the next decade will realize even more growth in tourism
and the output rate might increase by 4.6%.
The expanding significance of tourism not only increases the
economies but also channel the inner resources of regions that have more
fascinating destinations which can turn their resources into its development
which ultimately enhances their image around the globe attracting international
travelers and tourists. But still, not all countries have these benefits
because not all countries are benefited with natural resources as the purpose
of getting benefit with tourism depends more on natural resources than man-made
resources. Many countries are enriched with resources and they have them
abundantly while many have very limited resources and landscapes with poor
infrastructure. A country’s economy heavily depends on the competitiveness of
tourism industry as compared to other nations. And due to globalization, the
tourism industry also has to abide by governmental rules and regulations. This
is the reason that tourism has emerged as one of the main industries of the
world. As per The World Travel and Tourism Council, more than ten percent of
the world economy output is a result of tourism. Many researchers say that
tourism belongs to only rich people who can afford to visit grand destinations
and can have luxurious activities there.
Unlike product specifications of durable goods, tourism cannot be
physically displayed or cannot be presented at the time of purchase. These are
the intangible services that are supposed to be bought before they can be used
and are bought away from the place of consumption. Therefore, tourism includes
very catchy descriptions and representations by the intermediaries who can best
explain to you the benefits of visiting a particular destination with all the
attractive images and visuals so that they can attract more customers.
Successful satisfaction of customers can only be ensured if the agent has the
ability to display all the timely and accurate information.
This emergence and rapid growth of tourism industry has increased
multinational businesses going into domestic and local markets while there are
factors like information technology and telecommunications that are increasing
competitive pressure on big scale companies. The customers of this age are
becoming more sophisticated which also increases the level of demands and
expectations of high standards. The business running at tourist attracting
places have to make sure that they deliver up-to-the mark quality of services
so that the tourists can recall their name even if they reach their home back.
And this factor also increases the chances of more and more potential customers
for those businesses based on the customer experience. This creates a
competitive dimension between not only the small businesses but also the
overall tourism trend globally. Every country’s tourism industry has to make
all the standardized services to ensure good word of mouth about their
destinations and landscapes. And the main focus is always upon destination
competitiveness, tourism management activities and sustainable environmental
policies.
HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT of Tourism refers to temporary visits or movement of
people from one place to another as a destination which is outside their normal
living places or work or residence
The term ‘tour’ emerged in 1960
when the Britishers traveled to different location of the continent to study
about their cultures and social life. This widening of knowledge was gradually
adopted by many other people who had same interest in cultural centers. This
resulted in opening up of many historic and cultural European centers to the
British tourists. In 1830, when a rail link was built between major centers of
Europe, it attracted many travelers and from there this process began when the
entrepreneurs also started exhibiting their launches by travelling through
trains. And by the end of 1970s, many small fishing resorts were made around
the British coast that started attracting many tourists.
In the early years, tourism was
linked to increasing wealth, outgoing attitudes and having an access to the
luxurious transports. As the access of transport allowed people to make their
travel destination reachable. This also caused mass production and mass
consumption of resources. Before the eighteenth century, there used to be
productions that could suit all in one design but after the advancement in
travel industry, manufacturers started having ideas to cater the needs of all
with different designs and different products. The availability of motor cars
after 1930, also caused a rapid increase in tourism and airplanes for the
wealthier community to travel around the world. The development of holiday
camps also started attracting people as a source of low budgeted market for
holidays and the public liked such ideas wholeheartedly. Similar ideas related
to holiday camps around beautiful landscapes and coastal areas resulted in huge
success. The cool and fresh climates of northern areas resulted in the
construction of inland resorts which also introduced packaged tours in the
industry. Package holidays became established in western Europe during 1960s
which resulted in substantial expansion in tourism abroad. A package holiday
refers to a pre-planned tour that has all the arrangements made at sale prices
including combination of components which turned to be a huge success as such
packages include all services normally compromising transportation and
accommodation but providing many other luxurious facilities.
CHALLENGES OF TOUR OPERATIONS of Tourism refers to temporary visits or movement of
people from one place to another as a destination which is outside their normal
living places or work or residence
Economies have gone through extensive
economic and social changes worldwide in the last two decades. And one of the
most challenging changes is that people are now tending towards spending more
on services before they ever used to. The countries who are already very much
developed does not bother much about tourism and it is not considered a luxury
activity there anymore rather has turned into a part of lifestyle or an
integral component of everyday life hence affecting the global industry as
producers and consumers have spread throughout the world. All countries
experience tourism as a major part of economic prosperity. Whereas, The World
Tour Organization, has predicted continued growth by the end of this century.
As tourism is an integral part of service industry, the economies have started
relying on these on a greater level. Tourism has become a new source of revenue
for these industries which can actually lead to renewed economies if utilized
effectively. This factor is more effective for developing countries that are
trying to make greater image through tourism and promoting it effectively.
Tourism allows the developing countries to display their culture, history and
nature to the world to seek prosperity. Tourism acts as a catalyst of success
among other crucial sectors like transport, telecommunication, health or
education. Other factors like technology, demographics and lifestyle patterns
can also indicate progressive patterns in tourism industry. But the tourists
who visits a new place does not experience the beauty of the destination but
they also judge other perspectives like the management, production of resources
and their availability and consumption of services. Tourists are more likely to
engage in new stuff that they hadn’t seen before in their own land so that tend
to experience new things as an adventure. Providing them absolute satisfactory
experience of service becomes a crucial task so that no tourist leaves with a
bad word of mouth. These factors are more concerning when the tours are managed
as packaged tours in which the businesses have already made deals with agents
to suggest their resorts or hotel to the potential customers. Such type of
packages includes great risk, high breakeven and high competitive prices.
Hence, customers become more likely to have proper knowledge and information
about the accommodations and facilities involved in packaged tours. They look
for many factors that can concern their whole planning towards implementing a
tour plan. Such factors can become challenging for the whole industry. Factors
like, the purpose of tour, choice of destination, budget, legal requirements,
tourist accommodation, tour duration or period, information related to
departure and stay, whole tour price and also the price in inflationary
condition, references tools, political conditions of the destined place and
also the relationship between the two nations from where the tourist leaves for
another as a destination. These factors compile up to make tourist’s
satisfaction.
THOMAS CROOK COLLAPSE of Tourism refers to temporary visits or movement of
people from one place to another as a destination which is outside their normal
living places or work or residence
Thomas Crook was one of the world’s
largest and oldest travel agencies and its collapse has impacted more than 6
million travelers around the world. The main reason behind the collapse was
liquidation when the rescue talks failed to secure 250 million dollars in an
unforeseen funding event which also affected many thousands of those who had
already paid for their vacations without a return ticket to their homes.
Although. Thomas Crook is a British company but its fan following managed to
attract customers from all over the world, especially Europe. When Thomas Cook
collapsed, the stranded travelers were made to travel back to their homelands
with UKs civil aviation authority. The passengers who had to fly out with
Thomas Crook were also informed about the cancellation of their flights by
their respective agents. Many people got affected due to this as they had to
pay certain amount extra to reach their homes back. People got frustrated
especially those who had to fly the very next day of the collapse making them
stuck at the placed for few days. Booking of new flights made people cost a lot
of dollars while the collapse has also affected many employees making them
jobless all of a sudden. Poor mergers and increased competition caused the
company to collapse while it was the world’s oldest company that had introduced
packaged tours. When the company merged with a UK based package travel-company,
it initially went well with high hopes but who knew that it’d end in disaster
as Thomas Cook had to face huge debts that became impossible to manage while
the UK based company also made profit only once in a while. Another reason was
the arrival of lower cost rival companies that caused Thomas Cook profit
margins to go under even more pressure. The company had to issue two profit
warnings within only one month. Hence, the company who was once a popular one
stop shop for travelers because of its phenomenal travel packages went into
heavy liquidation.
FUTURE OF PACKAGED HOLIDAYS
The holiday industry is making phenomenal
updates and evolving with a brisker speed mainly due to the latest apps and
peer-to-peer, e.g, airbnb that adds to the disruption as people can noe book
holidays with the Internet from their homes. Travel bloggers and other media
influencers are also playing a vital role in promoting authentic and customized
travel plans with their personal experiences. Although, package holidays have
been under pressure and constant changes but still there are many big countries
that still use these packages as offline options. After the collapse of Thomas
Cook, many started thinking that package tours and holidays have also collapsed
but it’s merely a wrong perception as in Asia, package holidays are still the
most easy to go and comfortable modes of traveling considered.
