Introduction of Usage of Mobile Technology in
Women Entrepreneurs: A Case Study of Uganda
In this paper, the main focus will
be to critically review the above-titled journal article. It is important to
understand when the topic of entrepreneurship is taken; it can have so many
dimensions. So, it is not possible to cover each dimension in one paper. So, a
journal article is taken for this review, which is discussing the women
entrepreneurs of Uganda. It is vital to mention here, why this article was
selected for this review. It is already said that entrepreneurship can have so
many dimensions to look at, and each dimension can reflect on so many other
topics. But it is often observed that research has not included women
entrepreneurship in this research arena as much as they should have been
focused. The women have not been given the importance, which they deserve in
this field, but the fact of the matter is that women entrepreneurship’s number
is gradually increasing, where women are showing their talent all around the
globe. So, this study is dealing with Women entrepreneurs of Uganda in terms of
using mobile technology, and that’s why the topic has been selected for this
particular review to see the impact of technology on women entrepreneurs,
especially coming from a developing world to see the state of affairs (Yadav & Unni , 2016)
Findings and Discussions of Usage of Mobile Technology in
Women Entrepreneurs: A Case Study of Uganda
In this research article, the
primary theme of the author was to analyze how mobile technology is being used
by the women entrepreneurs of Uganda. The motivation behind this research was
the fact that regardless of 80% penetration of mobile phones in the population
of Uganda, the studies to look at the research area of women entrepreneurs
using mobile technology for their projects are very rare. So, it is not
actually known how much impact mobile technology is making for women
entrepreneurs. It means that there is an absence of knowledge to see the
relationship between women entrepreneurs and mobile technology. It was vital to
see this relationship because mobile technology has made so many changes in so
many fields, so it was critical to see its impact on women entrepreneurs. This
basic idea forced the author to conduct this study, and he came up with an idea
to look at women entrepreneurs of a developing country, because research also
lacks its focus on developing world, especially when it comes to women.
The new idea or information
communicated through this article is an important one because it is focusing on
women entrepreneurs. It has been said that if the world has to achieve economic
prosperity and growth, then the role of entrepreneurship is going to be crucial
in this regard. So, a lot of research has been conducted on this, but most of
the research is general in nature, or it deals with males. It means that the
female gender has not been focused yet, where it is crucial to come up with
gender-specific research to see the role and development of women in the field
of entrepreneurship. It is also a fact that women are facing challenges in so
many ways as compared to men, and they have not been given due attention and
focus, which they deserved. The same is happening in the field of
entrepreneurship, where women are excelling but no one is noticing this
development (Meyer, 2018)
So,
this research article is coming up with an idea of promoting the research
focused on women entrepreneurs. This idea has not been focused yet, and it is
great to see if someone is paying attention to it. The question is why it is
vital to do so. It is indispensable to do so because women are equal parts of
society. Their role in society is as critical as the role of men. The women can
also do anything, which has been achieved by men, and women have shown their
potential and capability, whenever they were provided an opportunity. Moreover,
women have also been facing gender-based discrimination in a variety of ways.
The salary of women is comparatively less than men in almost every field. It is
also observed that women have been deprived of leadership positions, and that’
why there are not enough women leading small or large corporations al around the
globe. Keeping these facts in view, it can be said that women may have been
facing similar issues in the essence of entrepreneurship. So, if more research
work and ideas will be published, which are focused on women entrepreneurs, and
then it will encourage them to show their talent and capabilities (Tiwari, Mathur, & Awasthi, 2018)
The author has first reviewed literature before
continuing with the methodology to investigate more aspects of the research
topic. It is always good to review literature in a research study as it not
only gives a great idea about previous research work, but it also helps to find
a proper future direction to be covered in the research. The research design
and methodology used in this research is based on a mixed-method design. This
method was used because the study was trying to investigate a complex
relationship, where the mixed method was more appropriate to use than any other
method. So, both quantitative and qualitative approaches were made part of the
study. The focus group discussions were used for the qualitative approach. To
collect data, two districts of Uganda have selected; Ibanda and Kampala
districts. The 40 focus groups were used in the study along with 280 female
entrepreneurs. So, this is how data was collected after selecting the research
methodology.
After analyzing the data, the results and findings
were made for the study. This study revealed that 54.6% of female entrepreneurs
of Uganda believe that usage of mobile technology has made a positive impact on
their business, making it more profitable. The other viable finding of the
study was the fact that when women entrepreneurs use mobile technology, they
experience better and fast business communication. The women were able to
strengthen their business network increasing the entrepreneurship ability of
women. The profits of their business also increased. The other great benefit
found for women entrepreneurs was that business costs were decreased and women
were able to reduce various journeys, as mobile technology allowed them to
conveniently manage their business affairs. The women were also able to secure
better prices along with markets saving a lot of money, as well as, time.
When the overall article is analyzed with all its
elements, then I must say that it has done a very good job to focus on the area
of women entrepreneurs. A research field, which is lacking focus and attention,
has been made part of this research article, which is the biggest strength of
this article. The article also made a great step by choosing a mixed-method
research design which allowed it to cover both qualitative and quantitative
elements of the study. The other strength of the study was to discuss implications
of the research along with future direction, which allows other researchers to
get an idea, what else can be researched in this regard. The only weakness,
which I could see in this study, is the lack of one section, which is the
limitation of the study to reflect on its limitations of any sort (Komunte, 2015)
Conclusion
of Usage of Mobile
Technology in Women Entrepreneurs: A Case Study of Uganda
After analyzing the article looking
at its various aspects, it can be said that the article was a good one to cover
the essence of women entrepreneurs, a research area, which has lacked focus. In
this review, it was found that the overall article used appropriate research
methods and designs to analyze data, which gave considerable findings. The
results proved that impact of mobile technology as very much positive for the
women entrepreneurs of Uganda.
