If I were the president of an
organisation, I would want my employees to be collaborative instead of
competitive with each other. Although there are a number of researches which
indicate that competition among employees serves to increase the efficiency of
workforce, it is important to note that competition causes employees to
experience a discord and they do not collaborate with each other for the
achievement of mutual objectives. Just as the term implies, competition causes
employees to feel competitive towards each other and in severe cases, it causes
employees to harbour negative feelings towards each other. For instance, if an
employee is promoted and he is appreciated for the work he has done, it will
cause other employees to feel jealous and instead of affecting them positively,
it will create issues. In fact, the management might even experience
difficulties in managing employees. For instance, if there is a project that
requires employees to work as a team, they will not work with each other. In
addition to it, they will not communicate with each other and the project will
only result in failure.
Therefore, instead of competition, I
would want my employees to be collaborative. It would enable them to
communicate in an effective manner with each other. They will have a common
objective and they will invest their efforts to accomplish it. This approach
towards work will not only benefit them but will also result in enhanced
workforce efficiency (Longenecker, Petty, Palich,
& Hoy, 2013).
Regarding your organization or an organization you
have been with in the past, what do you see as that organization's core
competency? What set this organization apart from others? Be specific in
identifying this.
In the past, I have worked with an
organisation named Ignition Inc. It was a project management firm and I worked
in the department of research and development. The main objective of the
department was to come up with new and unique methods of meeting the needs of
customers by completing the project. What seemed to set this organisation apart
from any other company was its openness about creativity. The management
focused significantly on the need of collaboration among employees. For
instance, every employee was allowed to communicate with the other employee for
as long as he wanted. As long as employees did their work accurately and met
the needs of customers, they were allowed to do anything they wanted. Employees
were put into different teams and they had to work with each other for the
effective completion of the project.
Many organisations do not focus on
collaboration and creativity. However, Ignition Inc. made sure that the company
had an open and creative environment. Since employees were not subjected to any
limitations, it enabled them to be creative and more efficient than traditional
employees who were subjected to restrictions about not talking and being formal
within the company. For instance, it was identified by the management in an
analysis that the company’s workforce was twice as efficient as the workforce
of its competitor. Therefore, management implemented several initiatives which
had the aim of improving the creativity of employees and making them satisfied
and happy with the company (Sampaio, Thomas, & Font,
2012).
