Alpine Road by Jennifer Down
presents the marriage life of Clive and Franca. In the setting of short story,
Clive and France live by the countryside and they are going through some
difficult times. Actually, the main reason why they are going through harsh
times is because of Chronic Fatigues of Clive. Due to it, he is rendered unable
to work properly and in order to feed the family, Franca has to struggle and
work hard. Franca is disappointed by the disability of Clive and that is the
main reason why their relationship is suffering, weakening day by day.
In the short story, it has been
determined that Franca is experiencing a conflict. She has to work rigorously
and what is keeping her bound to Clive is her children. Due to her
disappointment in Clive, she gains an interest in Stephen. Actually, this
indicates that when a person is conflicted and is disappointed in another
person, he/she begins to find interest in others. Alpine Road explains and
determines the difficulties faced by a partner in marriage when the other is
unable to operate properly and fulfil his/her part of responsibilities. It
causes issues for both of them.
The ending of Alpine Road suggests
that while Franca believed that Clive was useless and could not do anything, he
successfully protected their children. This indicates that both partners in a
marriage have some specific responsibilities which can be fulfilled only by
them. It is possible for some responsibilities to be shared. However, it is not
always possible to share responsibilities equally in a relationship. Sometimes
issues are experienced which test life partners. In such situations, instead of
losing belief in the other, it is important to become each other’s pillars.
Marriage requires such type of support (Down, 2015).
