In my opinion,
humans of the earth have a responsibility to help these aliens. The reason is,
even though human beings are the “owner” of the earth, but we have to act
friendly and create a good relationship with aliens who enter the earth. Even
if these aliens came from different culture, ethnic and race, but we should
welcome and respect them. This could be considered as the reflection of
ourselves for other human beings how we accept the differences among us since
we know the fact that every human also came from different race and culture as
well. Thus, we have to accept and help these aliens as if we will do the same
to other human beings.
Question 2b: In the movie, the aliens were
not treated very well, and their eviction from District 9 to a refugee camp
shows a disregard for the alien’s subjective needs and no attempt to live in
harmony. If you were in charge of things when the alien ship landed, how would
you handle it?
If I were in
charge of things when the alien ship landed, the first thing I would do is find
a safe place for the alien. The reason why I will do this is because people
have different opinion and acceptance. Some people might be unable to accept
that alien in the earth, and they might also harm the alien as well. Therefore,
I will make sure that the alien will be safe and secure in the right place. In
my opinion, it is our duty to give the alien a safe and secure place while that
alien staying on the earth.
The Experiment
Question 1: Clearly the results of the
experiment don’t speak well about human nature. What factors do you think
caused the participants to lose their humanity?
The result of
the experiment does not speak well about human nature as we can see along with
the experiment progress, the participants who act as the guards start to the extent
their roles and figure out on how to take control of the prisoners. Even though
the participants have already been told about the rule which is the experiment
will stop at the first sign of violence, and that they will be paid if they
could follow the rule, the guards were still performing sadistic actions to the
prisoners. I think the factor of ego that caused the participants to lose their
humanity since they wanted to show how they could make others obey them by
doing those violent acts.
Question 2: Which thinker (Hobbes, Locke,
Rousseau) presents the most realistic conception about the State of Nature? Why
or why not.
Hobbes
demonstrates a true life scene wherever human beings were not tied up, have the
freedom to play their roles, freedom from the responsibility and societies.
These acts mutate to being almost like barbarians that never care about others’
feelings. The character Barris in the movie presents a noble person who turns
out to be “evil” due to the power that he had. He did all the violence and
sadistic actions in order to preserve that power to remain in his hand. As the
experiment ends, he immediately feels regret for all of his brutal actions.
This presents that the State could control humanity in the context of
preventing them from becoming barbarians.
2 Days 1 Night
Question: Do the employees have a duty to
forego their bonus so Sandra can return to work? Why or why not.
In my opinion,
the employees should forego their bonus so that Sandra will able to return to
her work. The reason is due to as explained that Sandra was taking leaves from
the company because of her depression and anxiety. That means that Sandra was
never planning to take any leaves from office to leave her works and enjoy her
life. Instead, she was suffering from depression and anxiety which need to be
healed.
Even
though we all have our own difficult situation that might make us consider not
to vote for Sandra, but we also have to consider one important thing. That
important thing is, if we are in Sandra’s position, then what we will feel, and
what we will expect from others? Everyone will have some difficulties in their
life, and sometimes, we need help from others. Thus, we have to consider this
point of view as a human being, we have to help each other.
Comment for Edmund Chan
Hi Edmund, I
have the same opinion as you that we have a right to help the aliens and create
a good relationship with them. I agree that as a human of the earth, we have to
able to present our hospitality, without seeing differences between them and us.
I
also agree with your opinion for “The Experiment” movie. The movie presents how
human beings could be brutal and destructive if there is no prevention of that,
we will definitely back to our nature.
