Essay Writing of Blade Runner that has been directed by the Ridley Scott

Category: Education Paper Type: Essay Writing Reference: APA Words: 1900

In a movie by Blade Runner that has been directed by the Ridley Scott, this is the movie that embodies number of different as well as important characters aspects for the culture period of postmodern. This is movie that is mostly about what does actually it means to be the humans in the controlled as well as the technological world along with the struggle between the humans along with the replicants. Some of the machines work in an exact way as human does and one can’t even tell the difference between humans and machines along with their working. This movie has one deep meaning of the world in a future and one can see with number of different symbols as they have been laid in a movie. In the movie, it has been shown that it always rains and sun never comes out and it never shines as well, streets are shown much filthy and narrow. This movie also revisits about the past time, it mimics and then holds up to the ridicule. Freedom that has been given to the humans give up in such an easy way to the machines therefore willing is considered to be the actual danger in the modern society that further lead towards the post-modernism. Postmodernism can be noticed here easily through the layout of architectural film towards the waste that is all over the ground which further lead towards the importance and carries all of the postmodernism towards the industrialism (Sturken & Cartwright, 2009).

Postmodernism or post-modernity is on the way towards its future but on the same side it also seeks out the shelter in a past time. Blade Runner is the one that has number of different boundaries between the past along with present. Audience for watching out this movie has been told that the movie has been set in the future back in 2019 but still there are many different proofs related to the past time like the clothes of eighties along with the different haircuts, language that has been used throughout the movie and all of the technology that has been used is also outdated in an extreme way. Another indication that has been shown related to the past is that the dresses of Rachel in the 50s clothes along with the soundtrack of movie don’t follow all of the normal music of drama movie at all. Reason behind this proof of past is that movie of Blade Runner completely based upon the predictions of future along with that is afraid of the future as well. Such movies are being made due to a reason and the reason behind each and every movie of this kind is to show people that something big is about to come and it may change the time. This is not just it but it also shows that one needs to be aware completely and need to make their things on point. Blade runner in this movie pushes all of the audience in the future where all of the unreal things start becoming real and this is not just an imagination or fantasy. Cars do fly and there are number of different scientists that can even plant out the memories into machines. These are just two of the examples that have been shown for the unreal to become real. All these kinds of movies easily portray that postmodernism is the one which tends to be one of the most disturbing things here in the living characters of everyday life. On page 309, authors stated about the society, style and identity. It started with the example of fundamental aspects of style, society and identity as people do not live in the post-modern world. Instead of that, we all live in a world of postmodernity and it causes constant tension with different aspects of premodern existence and modernity (Sturken & Cartwright, 2009). In the present world of postindustrial and preindustrial conditions, there are many ways to identify the modernity. Modernity here can be defined as speeding up of time as well as compression of space that results in urbanization, automation, and industrialization. All these conditions and modernity have a relation to virtual technology, media, information, and flow of capital in this era of globalization (Sturken & Cartwright, 2009).

The maker of this movie shows or have used number of different symbols for illuminating about the postmodernity like the use of movies as owls. Here an owl is not just an owl but it has been shown in three different ways or forms which are, woman, product or the artificial creature. Women’s are being shown in the movie as the model of pleasure and further represented as the models that can be bought or even sold as well. This gives out a complete new meaning to the term women being characterized by any of the object. All these three things are the ones that represents or shows a link for the past where all of the postmodern reveals out the break along with a past. All these three links are shown as unreal that are being further made real in one common thing where different lines of the forces interact with one another and then all these places are the ones where the modernity is being transferred into the post modernity for the complete description of a woman.

Gesamtkunstwerk is from a German language and it is the German term that roughly translates out as the total work of an art and further gives a description about an artwork, design or even the creative process where number of different artworks or art forms are being combined for the creation of a single cohesive whole. In the age of this information technology along with the mass media, all of us are being inclined to think out that different concepts like multimidiality along with the intermidiality are known to be the inventions for the contemporary culture. In the era of 19th century, there used to be much enhanced interest in the art theories along with the media as well. All of this increased the awareness for the relationship between the form and content, object along with subject and the message along with medium by the end of century.

Richard Wagner was one of the most influential composers of 19th century along with the man of theatre. Apart from working on different stage works, he wrote different kind of the essays that are associated with the philosophy encompassing out the wide variety of different topics starting from the music towards the theory of drama along with political to some of the social issues as well. He was the very first person as well as musician who consider or deliberate on the nature of the media that how it works and what is its role along with talking about different manifestations in the form of a communication among the public and different artists.

The term, Gesamtkunstwerk has been mentioned by the Wagner in one of his essay that is “Art and Revolution” where he successfully applied one of the concept to describe out the ideal association for the music, text along with the dance in a drama which was being termed as one of the highest form of the art along with the art work of future as well. Here according to the Wagner, ancient Greek tragedy used to be the forerunner for all of the idealized art-work of the whole future. All these concepts are being further elaborated by him in another essay that is known as the “Artwork of the future”.

Here the first idea of this Gesamtkunstwerk is pretty much closely associated to the social aesthetic utopias by the Wagner. In the essay of “Artwork of the future” Wagner is not only the one that has laid down all of the founding ideas of the ideal opera, which is being called as the musical drama by him. He also made a complete description and elaborated on different ideas about one of the idea relationship that is being shared between the artist and the audience as well. Here this can become much misleading to discuss all of them one by one individually; together with one another they would form the particular Wangerian world view that has one of the strong characters.

The second idea of Gesamtkunstwerk is about the theories presented by Wagner. Theories by the Wagner that are about the society along with the arts are known to be the ideal leader of media to shape out the men as they got influenced on a large scale by the movement of young Germany. This young Germany used to be the group of different artists along with the intellectuals who used to be active in 1830-1850. All of their movement swept away in Europe back in the 19th century. Young Germans are the ones that glorified the love and particularly love in the sexual way or form which they have regarded as the socially subversive. Art is the part that definitely had to imbue out through the areas of free eroticism along with the frank as well. Wagner here has embraced out all of the different kind of ideologies of all the Young Germans along with the Romanticism as well which got rejected because this whole lacked the political engagement. One of the famous quotes by Richard Wagner is about the rich faculty and artwork. The main description was that in separate arts, no one is the rich and it will remain unused in the future period as united artwork.

Considering the artwork and institutional context of artwork that is defined by Sturken & Cartwright, (2009) one of the most inevitable immersion in the culture and everyday life is self-awareness that led many postmodern artists to produce the work that gets a link with the modern community. The best example of this approach is the work of photographer Cindy Sherman who struck poses of evoking actress. Sherman’s photographs are considered as portraits that play an important role in the transition of artwork in modern artwork. The photographs were considered as ironic images and as the practice of work but later got acceptance as modern artwork. Another example is the artwork of Nikki S. Lee that combined ethnography and performance art. The aim was to experiment with the idea of forging the new identities from the cultural performance. These photographs were later displayed as a part of modern artwork. In Lee’s work, the role of Sherman was to portrait the identity, individuality, and simulation. The modern art movements consider the function of images therefore artwork of Lee was popularized at that time. Michael Jackson is another example of the transformation of artwork in modern artwork. He introduced a penchant for bodily transformation through several treatments and surgeries to change the look of skin and face. The appearance of Micheal Jackson eventually became completely different from his original looks. He is an example of modern artwork who removed every inch of physical markers of black identity and whitened his skin to an extreme level.
