Need
I. There are two problems that can occur when elderly people living alone do not get the companionship and care they need.
A. The first problem is that elderly people may not be able to meet their physical needs.
Example of an 87-year-old woman for whom the speaker was a volunteer caregiver.
Like this woman, many elderly people can live alone but need help with the cleaning, food preparation and transportation.

Persons age 75 and older have the highest rate of suicide compared to all other age groups.
That high suicide rate stems from three major causes.
a. helplessness
b. hopelessness
c. haplessness
Satisfaction
II. As individuals, we can help solve these problems by getting involved with a volunteer program that assists elderly people who need help living at home.
A. Here in Wisconsin, the Community Options Program is designed to help the elderly and people with disabilities stay out of nursing homes.
B. Right here in Madison, Independent Living provides companionship and household assistance for elderly people who live at home.
Visualization
