60 Second Sell Speech Instructions
Robin Ryan is a communication consultant and author of the best selling book “60 Seconds and You’re HIRED!”
One of the major takeaways from this book is to be able to clearly and concisely demonstrate your value to your employer by showing them how you could help out their company.
In this assignment we will prepare to answer the first question asked at nearly all interviews. “Tell me about yourself”.
When we are asked that question, you should respond with your ‘60 Second Sell’.

Required Steps for this Assignment:
1. Find the job posting for the job that you are applying for. If your intended dream job does not have a job posting currently active, please select another job in a closely related field. For example: If you want to be a sales manager for Pepsi Co. but they don’t have any job openings posted at the moment, use a sales manager job posting for Coca-Cola instead. (You are not required to turn in your job posting, but it is needed in order to know how to complete your assignment).
2. After you have found a good job posting, analyze the language and semantics used in the job description and try to figure out the 5 most important qualities you believe the company is looking for. (For example, if the description mentions that they prefer bilingual candidates two times, you should be sure to make that one of your 5 main points (as long as you are bilingual).
3. Attach your 5 Point Agenda when submitting your speech via McGraw-Hill Connect. You are not required to type out each word you plan on saying, but it could serve as good preparation for your speech.
4. Record Your ‘60 Second Sell’ Memorized Speech (Turns your 5 point agenda into a 60 Second long speech)
a. You can sit down for this speech, however, you still need to sit far enough away from the camera so that it does not look like you are just reading your speech off your monitor.
This 1 minute, memorized, speech will use Ryan’s approach when creating your own personalized “60 Second Sell”.
If you have not yet had work experience, you can use hypothetical jobs (in the future) that would work towards your career goal.
For example, a current high school student, scheduled to graduate high school in 2021, might want to apply for a nursing job after they graduate college in 2024. That student could say that they volunteered at a local children's hospital in 2023. That way when you are filling out your 5 Point Agenda, you have more information to use. Keep in mind, all hypothetical examples should be realistic for the career you are applying for.
5 Point Agenda
Your 5 Point Agenda is your 5 most marketable traits specific to the company you are interviewing with.
Once you have decided on your 5 points, list as many examples as you can think of proving that these traits fit you. You might not use every subpoint for your 60 second sell, but it is nice to have additional information ready to use for any follow up questions in your actual interview. (These examples will be the sub points for each of your 5 points.

60 SECOND SELL MEMORIZED SPEECH
Just about every interview is going to start with some generic question along the lines of “Tell me about yourself”, or “Why do you want to work here”?
In this speech, we will answer that question by using your 5 Point Agenda, and converting it into what Robin Ryan calls your “60 Second Sell”. A 1 minute, memorized speech that you are able to eloquently rattle off 5 examples of value that you are able to bring to the company.
60 Second Sell Example (You do not need to turn this part in, this is an example of what your speech would sound like)
“I’m a lifelong learner and a mother of two. I have followed an interesting and sometimes complex and hectic path to be where I am today and I’m not afraid to say that I am proud to have been able to see my dreams come to fruition. I have known from a very young age that I was destined to be in a helping profession when I started looking after my nephew who has developmental disabilities. My experiences as a student at Goodwin College has only affirmed my desire to work with people and proven to myself that I can succeed in anything I put my mind to. I can adapt to a changing environment, in fact I find I am at my peak performance when faced with tight deadlines and pressure. I hope to someday work where I can learn new skills and improve upon the skills that I already possess and from what I know about Hartford Hospital, this is the place where that can happen.”
This is your “brand”. You have just demonstrated that you:
1. Enjoy and have experience helping people.
2. Like, and are good at learning new things.
3. You can set goals and meet them.
4. You are not afraid of challenges. In fact, you love them.
5. You are able to manage your time.
