Assignment 11: Memo to Self – Motivation, Delegation & Feedback

Estimated time to completion: approximately 1.5 – 2 hours total to complete (reading, thinking,

writing, editing, proof-reading)

Submission format: A properly-constructed business memo, written to your “manager” self that

will help you identify personal strategies for managing professional motivation and conflict.

Include your name in both the “to and from” headings of the memo.

Directions:

This assignment is based on your own self-reflection in which you identify your own management

strengths and weaknesses (as you perceive them) as they relate to managing motivation and

conflict in the workplace. Your memo summary will be based on the readings for this lesson as

well as three online resources that you locate that help to focus your memo summary on areas

of specific personal improvement. Create a properly-formatted memo including identifying

information, a purpose statement, and a summary addressing the information contained in the

assignment format (below).

Assignment format

After reading all of the instructions in this document and considering a food product, you’re

ready to complete the assignment as a document file:

 Save file as (doc, docx, or pdf) using the filename LastName_FirstName_HW10

 Note *Mac users MUST turn on "extensions" when saving assignment or cannot be graded

 *Mac users MUST verify that “extensions” are on prior to submission (UF Helpdesk question)

 Use 11 or 12-point font like Calibri or Cambria (or related font, nothing fancy)

 Single space, 1-inch margins; use numbered bullet points (1-4)

 Upload properly formatted assignment to Assignment tab > Assignment 10

For writing your submission, use the following structure:

Purpose statement One sentence using active verb indicating WHY the reader is reading the

memo (i.e., a foreshadowing of WHAT the memo is about). You can indicate

that this is an “assignment” about motivation and conflict (since this IS an

assignment).

Paragraph 1. Summarize the most important aspect(s) of motivation you perceive to be

critically important for you to know as a manager. Include a direct quote

from the reading (using quotations) and be sure to include APA or MLA style

citations at the end of the memo. Explain WHY you think this motivational

aspect(s) are important to you to be a better manager and UNDERLINE &

BOLD this sentence. Briefly mention whether you think this area is one you are

already good at or it is an area you want to improve using a real or

hypothetical specific example and explicitly indicate whether your

example is real or hypothetical).

Paragraph 2. Summarize the most important aspect(s) of delegation you perceive to be

critically important for you to understand as a manager. Include a direct

quote from the reading (using quotations) and be sure to include APA or MLA

style citations at the end of the memo. Explain WHY you think this conflict

management aspect(s) is important for you to be a good manager and

UNDERLINE & BOLD this sentence. Briefly mention whether you think this area is

one you are already good at or it is an area you want to improve using a

real or hypothetical specific example and explicitly indicate whether your

example is real or hypothetical).

Paragraph 3. Locate two (2) web sources related to the manager’s role in providing

feedback (e.g., article, blog, commentary, infographic) and summarize WHAT

the articles are about and WHY you think they are important for you, as a

manager, to consider. UNDERLINE & BOLD the sentence that is the most

meaningful to you (your thesis sentence).

Citations: Provide APA or MLA style citations at the end of your memo for the articles or

web content used in Paragraph 3, including the web address.
