Assignment Overview
This assignment requires the student to perform an outdoor observation of the circumpolar constellations. Students must make an observation of the two (2) primary circumpolar constellations that can be readily observed in the Arnold, MD (39°N latitude) locale. Using tools such as discussion in the Astronomy Tools section, schedule an appropriate date/time/location/safe dark-site location to perform this outdoor lab.

The Weather Channel

The Weather Channel was a staple of weather prediction provided on most cable television providers. This website can provide an overview of the day's weather, hourly predictions, and a radar map of weather movement.

Similar to The Weather Channel, Accuweather provides similar information in a more condensed format. This website can provides current weather conditions, as well as hourly predictions, and a radar map of weather movement.

Weather Underground

Unlike the previous two (2) websites, Weather Underground uses data from non-NOAA sources, such as private weather station owners who publicly broadcast their real-time local weather. For more accurate and current weather conditions, Weather Underground can be your best source for hyper-local weather conditions.

Observational Predictor

The bane of all astronomers, the weather, has the greatest impact on an observation session. In order to better predict observation opportunities, a website was developed that combines and refines NOAA weather data for astronomy-specific weather predictions. Unlike weather predictors which are more interested in the potential for precipitation and events such as tornadoes or hurricanes, astronomers are also concerned about factors such as moon phase, cloud cover, and humidity.
