11th Grade American Lit /Comp B: Unit 4 Portfolio Ms. Barrett/Ms. Earwood Alternate Ending Portfolio Instructions : Compose a one- to two-page alternate ending to your selected short story, following MLA format. Begin your alternate ending with a sentence that appears on the last page of the original short story to transition from the original author's voice to your own. ● Complete all the activities in Unit 4, Lesson 7. ● Choose a story from Unit 4 that you feel could have a stronger or different ending. Rewrite the ending imitating the author’s original style and voice. Make sure I can tell that you read the story based on your ending. Here are the stories you have to choose from: ○ “The Masque of the Red Death” ○ “Young Goodman Brown” ○ “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” ○ “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” ○ “A Pair of Silk Stockings” ● Your essay must be in MLA format. ● The first sentence of your alternate ending will be a sentence from the original work so that I know where you are starting your new ending. ● You may turn in this outline for the rough draft in Unit 4, Lesson 7 In your alternate ending, you should do the following: 1. Keep the character names, personality and motivations the same as the original story you read 2. If you cannot remember all parts of the story you read, go back and re-read it again prior to starting this portfolio 3. Write a creative ending that still follows the natural progression of events that occurred in the story. 4. Aim for 2 pages 5. The goal of this assignment is for me to be able to recognize that you read and understood the story plot, characters, conflict and theme based on your creative ending 6. Use proper spelling and conventions as well as play formatting. (see sample for proper formatting) 7. Use this scoring rubric (attached, scroll to the bottom, look at page 4) to evaluate your own essay and write what score you deserve at the top of your paper before turning it in.
