CRITICAL in our revision and preparation for the synthesis paper:

1. Leader Behaviors is the topic of our paper, not a theme. We are analyzing outcomes and results of leader behaviors to identify consistencies in what is being reported.

2. Leadership Theories are also not themes: Theory and theoretic frameworks provide us a means to understand what it is we are observing in a given setting or set of reported outcomes. Therefore, theory is a means to an end, not an end in and of itself.

The key here is our themes come out of our review and analysis of outcomes; theory helps clarify outcomes, outcomes give us our themes, so theory then is not a theme but a component of research that helps us understand what it is we are looking at; theory then is not a theme itself.

Our Module 7 Synthesis Paper discussion examines themes (factors) of Leader Behaviors.

The importance of this starting point has to do with the progression of development that follows:

1. Topic = Leader Behaviors

a. The task is to identify three themes from the outcomes and results reported in three articles examining leader behaviors.

2. Given the task, we are essentially examining (and this should be familiar from our Mod2/4 work); we are examining factors of leader behaviors that influence leadership outcomes.

3. This gives us our first overarching research question: What are factors of leader behavior that influence leadership outcomes?

4. From there we are utilizing thematic analysis to identify themes from within the outcomes being reported.

a. So, for instance if our themes are:

i. Citizenship

ii. Mentoring

iii. Communication

5. We then have two research questions we can plug our themes in to and discuss from within the literature – and NOT JUST from within our three core articles:

a. Citizenship

i. What is the role of citizenship in leader behaviors?

ii. What is the influence of citizenship in leadership outcomes?

b. Mentoring

i. What is the role of Mentoring in leader behaviors?

ii. What is the influence of Mentoring in leadership outcomes?

c. Communication

i. What is the role of Communication in leader behaviors?

ii. What is the influence of Communication in leadership outcomes?
