Assignment 2

24-HOUR RECALL ASSESSMENT AND INTERPRETATION (30 POINTS)

Due October 24, 2019

THE OBJECTIVE:

To provide opportunity for students to use and compare the traditional and more innovative dietary assessment methodology: 24-hour recall interview and the computer-based ASA24.

NOTE: PRIOR TO COMPLETING THE ASSIGNMENT

1. Familiarize yourself with the multi-pass 24-hour recall interview method http://www.ars.usda.gov/Services/docs.htm?docid=7711

2. Familiarize yourself with the ASA24 program before talking to your respondent. You can do this by using the 2018 DEMONSTRATION version found at https://asa24.nci.nih.gov/demo/. You DO NOT NEED A USERNAME FOR THE DEMO SITE.

3. Set up an ASA24 researcher’s account. Set up respondents’ login and password (3 sets of login/password combinations per respondent).

ASSIGNMENT DETAILS

Part A:

Step 1. Please identify TWO adult individuals that you would like to request to participate in the exercise. They can be friends, classmates, workmates, family, etc.

Step 2. Conduct a face-to-face 24-hour recall interview utilizing the multi-pass method http://www.ars.usda.gov/Services/docs.htm?docid=7711.

The 24-hour recall forms are available in the assignment folder on Bb. Please ensure that you have the appropriate estimation food guides and food aids for the face-to-face interview

Step 3. Then request your respondents to complete the 24-hour recall, on THE SAME DAY, using the more innovative ASA 24. You need to provide give them the first set of login and password for them to access your ASA24 respondent site. Once your respondent has completed his/her ASA24 entry, print out his/her consumption summary reports (Summary reports are usually available approximately 24 hours after completing entry).

Step 4. After completing the face-to-face interview, enter the information, use the second set of assigned login/password information and enter the face-to-face food intake estimates into ASA24.

Print out the resulting consumption summary reports. For each respondent, you will turn in:

1. From face-to-face interviews:

(i) completed face-to-face 24-hour recall forms,

(ii) a description/diagrams/images of the estimation food guides that you used for the face-to face interviews (MS Word document),

(iii) a summary table of the resulting main food groups (MS Word document) and

(iv) a summary table of resulting nutrients (energy, fats, carbohydrates, proteins, fiber, vitamins A, B2, B9, B12, calcium, iron and zinc) (MS Word document). The food group and nutrient summary tables will be based on the face to-face interview data that you entered into the ASA24

2. From respondent’s ASA24 self-entry:

(i) a summary table of consumed foods and amounts,

(ii) a summary table of the resulting main food groups and

(iii) a summary table of resulting nutrients (energy, fats, carbohydrates, proteins, fiber, vitamins A, B2, B9, B12, calcium, iron and zinc). (Submitted as MS Word documents).

The food group and nutrient summary tables will be based on your respondent’s entry of consumed foods into the ASA24 program

Part B:

In addition, you will turn in typed responses to the following questions (8 points):

1. Describe each of your respondents as best you can: socio-economic, demographic, cultural, BMI status, any existing health conditions, etc.

2. Describe:

(i) your experiences: -compare the two methods (face-to-face versus ASA24).

(ii) Your respondent’s experience. Please ask your respondent to describe his/her experiences in participating in the face-to-face interview and ASA24 assessment. Include this in your write-up. -Was it more difficult to gather information using one over the other? Why or why not? -How useful were the recall aids: face-to-face interview and ASA24.

3. Based on your assessment describe your respondent’s level of comfort and ease in using each method.

4. Did you feel that the information gathered was accurate for each of the methods? - Why or why not?

5. What might you do to improve and gather more accurate nutritional information for each of the methods if you were to repeat this assignment?

6. Are the food items, food group and nutrient estimates from the two methods comparable? Comparison should be based on the following: the main food groups, energy, fats, carbohydrates, proteins, fiber, vitamins A, B2, B9, B12, calcium, iron and zinc. Are there any signs of bias (persistent under or over estimation)?

7. Based on the food group, energy and nutrient estimates from the face-to-face interviews, what percentage of your respondent’s met the recommended intake levels for

(i) each food group?

(ii) energy and nutrients (fats, carbohydrates, proteins, fiber, vitamins A, B2, B9, B12, calcium and iron
