Second Individual Paper Guidelines

1) You are to choose one ethical topic that is covered in one or both of your course texts. Your topic should be different from the one chosen for your first paper. For topic ideas refer to chapters 8-18 in Doing Ethics and/or the topical index in A 21st Century Ethical Toolbox (p. 475-478).

2) Using the criteria outlined in the document entitled Creating a Successful Proposal for Your Second Paper, assemble a paper proposal and submit it to the Instructor no later than seven days prior to the date the final paper is due. Your proposal must be approved prior to starting your writing project. For an illustration of a completed project, refer to the Instructor’s Capital Punishment paper found in the Materials folder.

3) Prepare a 6-8 page paper (typed, double spaced, 1 inch margins, 12 pitch font) in which you discuss your chosen ethical topic in a written format that contains the following elements:

a) Your research should include a minimum of 8 cited references, including page numbers, from one or both of your course texts. However, if you are using the Divine Command Theory you are allowed to use a minimum of 4 cited references from one or both of your course texts, with the remaining references from whichever sacred text you select. If other outside sources are utilized (websites, other books, articles, etc) they should be approved in advanced by the Instructor. . In addition all sources must be properly cited within the body of the paper and on an attached reference page. (12 points)

b) A general overview of the ethical topic and why you believe it is important to consider. (10 points)

c) A clearly written perspective that persons could embrace when considering this topic. (3 points)

d) The clear integration of two ethical theories previously studied in class. Each theory should be correctly defined, and then accurately presented through the use of clear and rational arguments to demonstrate how they both support and challenge your perspective. In addition, your second individual project should utilize two new ethical theories not previously selected for your first study. (40 points; 20 for each theory).

When evaluating these criteria, I will be looking for the following:

i. Were two of the following ethical theories utilized: Divine Command Theory, Subjective Relativism, Cultural Relativism, Act Egoism, Rule Egoism, Act-Utilitarian, Rule-Utilitarian, Kant’s Ethics or Virtue Ethics?

ii. Did you utilize two new ethical theories not previously selected for your first study? If not, any repeated theory will result in a 10 point penalty.

iii. Was each chosen ethical theory:

a. Correctly defined?

b. Accurately presented, through the use of clear and rational arguments, to demonstrate how the theory both supported and challenged your perspective?

e) Provide a summary, at least two paragraphs in length, containing a minimum of three new insights and/or unanswered questions that surfaced from your study. Finally, provide an overview of your own personal perspective regarding your ethical topic. ( 15 points)

f) The following additional criteria will be considered in your evaluation (10 points)

i. Was the writing based upon rational argument (the preeminence of reason)?

ii. Did the writing wrestle with the principle of universalizability?

iii. Did the writing incorporate the principle of impartiality?

4) At the conclusion of your paper, use your chosen career path (either what you are presently doing as a vocation or what you hope to do upon graduation) as a basis for answering the following questions (last question on next page):

· List one or two ethical challenges you have either faced in the workplace, or anticipate encountering. For each ethical challenge listed, use what you have learned in this course to discuss what you believe are the ethical standards expected of an employee when they encounter each challenge.

· Finally, indicate which ethical theory or theories studied in this course (Divine Command Theory, Subjective Relativism, Cultural Relativism, Act Egoism, Rule Egoism, Act-Utilitarian, Rule-Utilitarian, Kant’s Ethics or Virtue Ethics) best represents your own life and worldview. In a closing paragraph provide a detailed illustration as to how this ethical theory has been illustrated by you through your own personal life or within your current vocation. (10 points)
