For our next discussion, let’s practice close reading of a literary text. I have selected 3 sonfs: U2’s song, “Bullet the Blue Sky,” Bruce Springsteen's "Streets of Philadelphia" and Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone". After reading the lyrics carefully, answer the following questions and respond to others.
Explain four instances of symbolism and figurative language in the songs.
Do you find a protagonist in these songs? If so, who?
Do you find an antagonist in these songs? If so, who or what is it?
Is there a central conflict in these songs? If so, what is it?
What themes do you find in these songs?
How have the songwriters used sounds to draw the attention of the listeners?
Optional question for anybody with more of a music background who can listen to the song:
7. How have the songwriters used sound effects and other musical elements to draw the attention of the listeners? Remember that sound effects can be language-based as well as instrument-based.
If you would like to hear a live performance of U2's "Bullet the Blue Sky", my Spring 2009 student David Ferguson found the following performance on You Tube:
