Hey everyone! I will kick off our discussion board. It was very interesting to learn about the Beothuk and I now want to work to get their remains back to the homeland. Pre-history is important to be able to understand the present and future. A whole nation was wiped out and the only way we can keep them in mind is through the telling of history. With the knowledge of the past, we can ensure history does not repeat itself. The Beothuk’s main hunters were killed and later their whole nation disappeared sadly. I believe we can preserve knowledge in a western way by creating learning models and instructions through school. In the Indigenous way of knowing it is more of a spiritual way I would suggest by storytelling and passing on knowledge from our elders and having ties to our community. The documentary suggests that we preserve knowledge by having the Mary march museum for people to learn about the Beothuk. I personally believe they need to rename the museum by the Beothuk woman's actual name Demastuit instead of the name they gave her in captivity (she was caught in march).
When we lost the knowledge of the Beothuk we lost a sense of knowing of the land. These people had made their way from Conception Bay to what is referred to nowadays as Red Indian lake in inward Newfoundland. The Beothuk could have passed on valuable teachings about the land and a deeper connection and respect for the land. We lost a key piece of history of what life was like prehistorically.
