WRT 201 Professor Fitzgerald SPRING 2018 Conformity & Rebellion in the Short Story Over the last few weeks, we have been exploring the very different ways that writers have addressed the themes of conformity & rebellion in the short story. Now you will apply this process to a story of your choice. Reading Assignment: Choose one of the other short stories in the Conformity and Rebellion unit (see table of contents on page xvii). Read the story of your choice. Then, annotate and/or complete guided reading template and/or split notes; if you choose to annotate, be prepared to submit your copy with the final draft. Be sure to consider theme in general and how the short story connects to the overall theme of Conformity and Rebellion. You should definitely be specific and note quotes and/or page numbers. Writing Assignment: Plan, draft, and polish an essay in which you consider how the author of your choice uses literary elements to connect to the themes of Conformity & Rebellion. You should use textual references and quotations to support your assertions. You may include references to short stories we have discussed together, but the focus of the paper should be the story of your choice. You may wish to read “Writing about Literature” pages 30-73 in our text. • Minimum length: 2-3 pages (not including works cited page). • MLA Format: 12 point font, double spaced, one inch margins, parenthetical citations, and works cited page. • Reading assignment, prewriting, supporting process materials, and rubric must be attached to final submission • The maximum grade for any paper that includes more than one run-on, fragment, or subject-verb agreement error is a B, no matter how insightful the analysis. • Five point bonus ( half grade) will be given with proof of Writing Center visit Reading Assignment Friday, 2/9 First Draft Posted to Turnitin via Moodle Tuesday,2/13 Second Draft posted to Turnitin via Moodle Friday, 2/16 Final draft due in print with pre-writing and evidence of editing/writing center visit and reading assignment notes/annotations. The essay presents specific textual evidence and quotations in support of its thesis. The essay effectively maintains unity and coherence. The conclusion restates thesis, connects to readers, and returns to opening concept. The paper adheres to MLA Format. Sentences are varied and complete. There are no fragments, run-ons, or errors in subject-verb agreement.
