Hello. My name is Dr. Julie. I am the Course Leader for RN Information Systems in Healthcare. This video is about the Week 2 Assignment: Course Project Milestone 1. This assignment is due Sunday, end of Week 2, by 11:59 PM Mountain Time. You can see that I have the Milestone 1 guidelines pulled up on the screen. You can find these guidelines by selecting Week 2: Healthcare Information Systems, and then Week 2 Application to Practice: Week 2 Assignment: Course Project Milestone 1.
You will use the required assigned topic for your course. You can find the required topic in the assignment guidelines. You will create a scenario based on this required assigned topic. You will continue to use the required assigned topic for Milestones 2 and 3, because each assignment builds off the previous one to develop the entire project. Be sure to use the templates provided for you for each Milestone. One of the choices for your Milestone 3 is the only assignment that doesn’t have a template.
Before I continue, I have an important announcement. I have completed each milestone assignment that will be featured in the three assignment helpful hints videos, posted throughout the session. To ensure that there is no unfair advantage, use of the topic or examples is prohibited. This is not prescriptive or the only way to complete this assignment. Your milestones should look differently than mine. This is simply one example to facilitate your success. Do not use my topic or examples I provided for your course project. Using word-for-word information from the example is considered plagiarism and may be an academic integrity violation. The examples are meant to serve as a guide, and give you an idea as to the information that should be included. Remember that all submitted work must be original to you.
Now we can get started. The first section of the Milestone 1 assignment is the patient scenario section. You will create a scenario based on this required assigned topic. The goal as you see in the rubric and template is clear and concise writing. We are working towards Milestone 3, which is a PowerPoint or Poster. Please be sure to carefully read the assignment guidelines and rubric.
Let’s look at the first section of the template: Scenario for Milestone assignment. Looking at my Milestone 1 example, you can see that I have selected the example required topic is obesity. Remember that there are many ways to successful complete this assignment. For this section of the assignment: The scenario should be clear and concise, including a disease process, diagnosis, OR identify a patient with a desire to maintain good health and prevent illness. Include the nurse’s assessment of learning needs and readiness to learn.
Here is my scenario:
J.D. is a 23 year old male and states significant weight gain since finishing high school. He isn’t sure his current weight but has gone up 4 sizes in 5 years. Current Weight: 220 lbs. Current height: 5 feet 10 inches. BMI: 31.6 and BMI category: Obesity
Vital signs: Within Normal Limits. No previous medical diagnosis. Family history: HPTN and Diabetes.
Education needed on diet and exercise. J.D. eats fast food 1-2 times per day, doesn’t eat any fruits or vegetables, and has a sedentary lifestyle. He voices that he wants to change to become healthier and will follow any education that he is given by the nurse or provider.
The next section is Education where you will describe in detail content planned for teaching this patient in the scenario. Here is my example:
The patient will be taught about diet, exercise, how to determine ideal body weight, and short/long term goals.
Dietary guidance: Provider suggests an 1800 calorie ADA diet. This diet focuses on caloric intake while taking in appropriate food groups (Author, Year).
J.D. will be taught about reading labels of food, limiting fast food, increasing fruits and vegetables, increased water consumption to 8 glasses per day, and understanding what the diet means for his life. Resources given on this diet and the calories in many of his favorite foods. Information given on the healthy cooking class being provided by the local hospital. J.D. will be taught how to journal food intake to increase awareness of what is being consumed. He agrees to a follow-up appointment in two weeks to review the food journal, weigh-in, and to answer any questions.
Exercise guidance: Provider has cleared patient for exercise. Education give on the importance on both cardio and strength training and information provided for a free exercise class in the new neighborhood gym. The American Heart Association (2019) recommendations of 2 ½ hours of cardio per week. Brochures given to patient on the exercise education for review.
The next section is Identifying a mHealth application. Remember that this must be related to the required assigned topic, not any additional information that is written into your patient scenario. My example must be related to obesity, which is my required topic.
For this example, I am not going to provide an actual example of the application because I don’t want to take away a potential valuable mHealth application for potential upcoming assignments. If the app is one of my favorites, it might be one of your favorites too. Instead, I am going to show how to complete this section on the assignment.
You will Identify a mHealth app that could benefit the patient. Describe the app including the mHealth app name, purpose, intended audience, mobile device(s) upon which it will operate, where to download or obtain it. Include a working link if it is to be downloaded from a website. Add any other information you believe would be pertinent to this situation. Make sure to add a citation for this mHealth app in APA format.
Here is my example:
mHealth Application: App name. This mHealth app tracks daily caloric intake and calories burned per day, provides tips on how to read food labels, and awareness of calorie consumption versus calories used (APA citation). This app is intended for anyone age 4 and up and is available in both Android and iOS devices including iPhone, iPad, and Apple watch.
The basic mHealth app is free. A premium version has a free trial for 1 month and a monthly cost of $9.99 a month (APA citation).
The Premium version educates on dietary habits, provides information on food analysis, and time stamps exercise for effectiveness in work outs.
The mHealth application can be downloaded from Google Play or the iTunes App Store.
Here are links: Working Link(s) here
At the bottom of my template, I will provide all of my references in APA format because I have cited from resources within this assignment.
This is all that you as the student will complete for this assignment. You see that there is one final area on your template. This is where your instructor will provide the statement on the required assignment and topic and will let you know whether this was Accepted, Accepted with revisions needed, OR Not accepted.*Remember that any required revisions will not alter your grade for this assignment. *
This concludes the Milestone 1 helpful hints video. I hope you have found this recording to be beneficial. Please be sure to contact your instructor with any questions or concerns. Thank you for listening.
