1Introduction About MCC Merchant Category Code, or MCC, is a four-digit merchant classification code that identifies the merchant by their business line. It is similar to a Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code, but it is broader in scope. As an International Standards Organisation (ISO) standard for representing “industry classifications”, MCC provides a convenient and reliable way to identify and categorise reportable transactions. It can also be used for blocking purchases for specific companies or categories of businesses, assuming account limits and other controls do not intervene. American Express uses 28 MCC groups that denote various categories (e.g., 2 Amusement and Entertainment, 28 Wholesale Trade). These groups are further subdivided into 281 MCC codes that denote various types of business (e.g., 742 Veterinary Services, 4511 Airlines and Air Carriers, 7011 Lodging Hotels, Motels, and Resorts). About this Directory This directory is intended as a reference for American Express @Work Enhanced Reporting customers who use MCC groups and codes in their Corporate Card and Corporate Purchasing Solutions customised reporting.Table of Contents Page Section 1 MCC Groups2 Section 2 MCC Codes10 For your convenience, the Table of Contents is hyperlinked to allow you to easily navigate through the document when viewed electronically.
