Problem Statement Comment by Jason Henry: What is your topic?
There are many problems as a result of gun violence. The tourist board and the Turks, Caicos Hotel and Tourism Associations claim a rising number of tourists booking being canceled. The trend is increasing and causing them to be worried. This cancellation of the bookings is reported to be caused by the incident that happened in late June. The gun incidence involved a holidaymaker from the United States getting shot. This was in the process of home invasion and attempted burglary. He was shot and wounded while vacationing with his family. He was a partner at a law firm in Washington, DC. The man of 57 years was shot by two gunmen who broke into the rented beachfront property. Surprisingly, the burglars got past the security. This illustrated the weakness in the security of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Furthermore, this incidence takes weeks after another incidence of armed robbery. Comment by Jason Henry: What tourist board? And should this not be in caps? Comment by Jason Henry: You need to credit a source for this information Comment by Jason Henry: This is not to be in a Problem Statement…nor even in the Introduction.
The Turks and Caicos Islands have recorded two murders in three days. TCI is considered a haven. That is why many tourists visit the place. The people who died were gunned down. The report indicated that they were two masked men in possession of a gun. They demanded money from those two murder cases in their home. These cases of murders are done on the tourist. These burglars are after the money or property of the tourists. The cases are increasing the rate of reduction in the annual number of tourists on the island. Guided questions
1. How gun violence has influenced tourism. Comment by Jason Henry: Last time I checked, questions had question signs…these are statements
2. Factors contributing to gun violence cases to increase.
3. Measures taken by the government.
The problems from gun violence have caused the tourism industry to get a negative view of the tourists. This is because there is a lot of fear due to tourists' security issues (Mawby, 2000). Therefore, the violence has culminated in putting pressure on the government to tackle this gun violence and crime rate. The government has opted to react by increasing the resources of law enforcement. They have increased their efforts by recruiting more police officers from abroad. However, the United Kingdom refused to send army personnel. Nonetheless, some police officers have been recruited from Jamaica. Comment by Jason Henry: What is all of this related to? These crimes and gun violence are said to originate from the rising cases of immigration. The activities take place in the northeast Caribbean route (Griffith, 2010). Also, illegal weapons and narcotics are transported through this route. This has been a major problem in the Turks and Caicos Islands in recent years. Marijuana is also a common drug that is illegally smuggled into the island. The guns find their way into the island, and hence the criminals get access to them. This contributes to rising gun violence. To handle the illegal migration, the government has introduced removing the immigrants whose visas have expired. Therefore, anyone immigrants found illegally residing or working in the Turks and Caicos Islands will be deported. The minister of border control stated this ordinance. To prevent these illegal immigrants from returning, they are added to the "stop list" of immigration.
The police, as a result, have adopted a mechanism for them to handle the reports made by tourists. They consider these reports seriously. The police command structure has been designed to be proactive in preventing crimes (Cihan, 2012). The only limitation of these efforts is that there is a lack of resources and physical constraints. The police may not arrive at the reported crime quickly since the infrastructure, and the traffic is terrible. Also, TCI has many streets that are unrecognized due to them not being marked. Therefore, it is hard for them to locate the place of crime. These factors make it hard for both the tourists and the locals to report these crimes when they take place. The fast response can be improved by handling some of these time-consuming constraints.
The crime in the Tusks and Caicos decrease the economy of the island (Detotto, Kyklos). Also, it may influence the local businesses to deteriorate. Gun violence on the island is used for theft. Therefore, this will stunt the growth of many businesses on the island. Other than the fear it creates, it also hinders these businesses from growing by taking away their profit. The economy of Tusks and Caicos depend on 35% of GDP on tourism. Therefore, any factors that hinder the prosperity of tourism directly affects the economy of the island. This means that it will create poverty in the people of Tusks and Caicos. Appropriate measures are imperative for an economy that extremely rely on tourism for its growth. There are cases of money getting stolen as a result of dealing with cash. The government supports the use of either credit or debit cards where possible. Also, they are encouraged to avoid using ATMs that are in isolated areas. This is in consideration of the insecurities that are imminent. Therefore, these are measures used to prevent the tourists from getting in harm's way. Thus, they are encouraged to be aware of their surroundings before they can make any withdrawals. These criminals can duplicate those cards. They will be able to steal their information and make a withdrawal from the account of the victim. The government encourages tourists to take a picture of these skimming devices when it is safe to contact the police.
