Course Name: MechEng 721 Fundamentals of Fluid Flow

Class Meeting Times and Location: Th 5:00 – 7:40 pm; KIRC 1150

Course Instructor:

Office Hours and Location: Th 3:00 – 5:00 pm (Physics B60) & after class

Course Description: 3 Cr. G., Inviscid, viscous and compressible flow; potential flow in

aerodynamics; analytical solutions of Navier-Stokes equation; laminar and turbulent boundary

layers, jets, wakes, and separating flows; applications. Prereq: grad st; Mecheng 320(P).

Course Objectives: This course surveys the principal concepts and methods of fluid dynamics.

Topics include mass conservation, momentum, and energy equations for continua, the

NavierStokes equation for viscous flows, lubrication theory, boundary layers and separation, and

compressible flows.

Grading Scheme:

The total score will be curved, and a final letter grade will be assigned as follows:

Homework assignments: 30%

Two midterm exams: 40% (20% each)

Final exam: 30%

Total: 100%

Plus or minus grades may be given to the scores near the dividing lines.
