Assignment: Write an essay of 700-750 words that analyzes the poetic devices of Rita Dove’s poem, “Daystar,” and compares and contrasts it to W.H. Auden’s poem, “Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone.” Both poems express the theme of loss and despair, each with its own unique use of theme, tone, sound, diction, and symbolism. Briefly summarize the two poems, analyze them in terms of literary devices, and compare and contrast them to each other.
The following are questions to stimulate your thinking about the poems:
Is “Daystar” despairing? Are there points of hope? How does its tone compare to other melancholic poems, like W. H. Auden’s “Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone” or Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s “Tears, Idle Tears”? Although “Daystar” is not spoken by the woman who is being described, to what degree might one say that the poem’s tone reflects the woman’s sentiments? Meanwhile, the poem by Auden (a gay poet writing about the loss of his lover) also expresses feelings of sorrow and despair. The two poems express similar subject matter in uniquely different ways that make use of different poetic techniques. Analyze these differences. Make sure to note the specific choices each poet made to create their own distinct effects on the reader. Remember to use paragraphs (with topic sentences) to organize your arguments into distinct topics and points. Disorganized essays will receive a significantly lowered grade. And, as always, proofread your essay for errors in punctuation and grammar errors.
