Please read the Introduction to the book written by Lionel Trilling and the first three chapters. Part of this introduction will be difficult to understand because it was written almost 70 years ago and the issues Trilling brings up are issues that were pertinent to global affairs at that time. George Orwell went to Spain in December of of 1936 and fought in the war for about six months. Here's a Wikipedia article on the war:

Read at least the part above the table of contents. I will supplement your reading by lecturing on the Introduction and the first three chapters on Tuesday (I will post the lecture on Canvas late morning).
Here's a Wikipedia article about Orwell:

At the minimum, read the part of the entry about Orwell's time in Spain.
Some things to keep in mind as you're reading are:
1)What are the conditions of the troops Orwell is joining?
2) What are some of the things that jump our at you as you read about the setting and the people?
3) What can the reader learn about the class of the people fighting? What descriptions of Orwell's surroundings does he give that help the reader make sense of the class of the people?
This is a discussion page, so below I'd like you to respond by the end of the day Monday with your thoughts (at least eight sentences) about the Introduction and the first three chapters of the book. If you're confused or bored, explain why. If there are part you find interesting, explain why. If you have questions or there are part of the text that are confusing to you, point them out and ask about them.
I'd like you to respond to at least two other students in the class with responses that is are at least eight sentences long.
