Heres the question- When working on your Communications Plan Portfolio assignments throughout the course, how did you use principles of strategic communication to implement your organizational change? Could you have used the principles better in some way?

The principles of strategic communication greatly influenced my ideas in regards to implementing my organizational change. I continuously referred back to the general expectations of commonly used strategic communication methods. Cornelissen (2017) states, “there are in fact various ways to communicate themed messages (p. 116).” Although the tactics of strategic communication methods may vary, the purpose and the general characteristics of strategic communication are similar across related industries. Strategic communication involves a great deal of thought, planning, and analysis. Therefore, I had to continuously rethink and analyze the principles of strategic communication that I was applying to my plans. I think I applied the principles in the best way possible. While there is always room for change, I think what helped me the most was the adjustments I made along the way as I referred back to general strategic communication strategies along the way. I had to get out of the mindset from the beginning and realize that planning does not mean simply designing a clever advertisement or sending a tweet without thinking about its implications. To create an intentional message, you must begin with a realistic communication goal for what you’re trying to achieve. If you want to cultivate positive associations with the organization’s brand, you must think outside the box and continuously rethink your strategies according to new trends, changes and stakeholder assessments.Cornelissen, J. (2017). Corporate communication: A guide to theory and practice,5th ed. Los Angeles, CA: Sage Press.

I utilized strategic communication principles in my preparation of the Communications Plan Portfolio by remembering to focus on creating clear goals and objectives. Creating clear goals and understanding how a certain set of audience attitudes, behaviors, or perceptions will support those objectives is what makes communication strategic. In strategic communication, message development, or the process of creating key points or ideas, requires high levels of planning and research. These messages are targeted, or created with a specific audience in mind, and help to position an organization’s communication goals with its structural goals. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected through new forms of communication, the role of strategic communications is to help organizations understand how to effectively deliver their message to key audiences. One weakness that I feel could have been addressed in order to apply strategic communication more effectively would have been to incorporate more of a variety of communication methods. I never really considered implementing means that appealed to the audience’s emotions. “An emotional message style is another form of symbolically oriented communication (Cornelissen, 2017; p. 118).” I, on the other hand, stuck to a few common and effective communication methods. However, I realize that in today’s society there are literally probably hundreds of different ways to communicate professionally. However, I limited my choices to methods that I was already familiar with. Nevertheless, strategic communication should involve a variety of communication-related platforms when addressing communication needs, such as public relations, brand communication, advertising, and more.

Understanding the communications principles helped me to better prepare my communication plan portfolio. The few important steps that I utilized was identifying communications styles, stakeholders, and platforms. This allowed me to focus on the organizational change, develope objectives, set goals, and think of contingency plans. I believe those issues will help ensure the successful implementation of the organizational change. According to the Corporate Communications a Guide to Theory and Practices, "Social media, in comparison, are probably best characterized as a form of "crowd casting"; they enable stakeholders of an organization to self organize as a "crowd" in order to produce and disseminate content about the organization" (cornelissen, 2017, pg24)I believe that I could of made small changes into the message delivery itself. Allow for more interaction, than just sitting through a power point presentation. get the crow involved and exited to learn new things. By keeping them engage is the key to the success of the organizational change.
