- View the1993 NOVA documentary video “The Deadly Deception,” which tells the story of several African American men from rural Alabama who were unknowing participants in a US government-run human experiment of untreated syphilis, also known as the Tuskegee Syphilis Study.
- Browse the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) website "The Tuskegee Timeline." Note that events pertaining to the Tuskegee Syphilis Study spanned over 100 years, the study continued until 1972, and a national apology was not given until 1997!
- Discuss the Tuskegee Syphilis Study with your assigned group. Consider the testimonies of the men that were interviewed in the documentary with regard to such things as: the timing of events, the people involved as investigators, and the specifics of the experiment, including procedures performed, “treatments” offered, incentives for participation, actions taken to withhold penicillin, etc. You must provide at least one substantive group discussion post by Thursday at 11:59PM ET.
- Then, suggest and discuss ways that the actions of the investigators of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study violated the three basic ethical principles of research involving human subjects outlined in “The Belmont Report” of 1979. You must provide at least one additional group discussion post by Sunday at 11:59PM ET.
Discuss how the lay public perceives risk and how this differs from environmental health professionals. From your assigned reading on risk communication, identify at least one major tenet of risk communication and discuss why it is important to incorporate when communicating risk to the public.
