Kaepernick not standing for the national anthem controversy

These are notes I gathered in one full day to give an example of how you might start your investigation of whatever controversy you choose (yes it was many hours, you need to plan for that to create a strong presentation, so get started NOW).

If you see pictures that may be helpful, copy and cite some along the way

The Best Example Of Heroism and Patriotism I Can Ever Show You

Define the controversy:

Colin Kaepernick 1st did not to stand for the national anthem on Friday, August 26 to protest racial injustice and police brutality in the US.

Sat 1st two games when injured, in street clothes, then sat in uniform, listened to feedback from Nate Boyer, a former member of the Army's Green Berets who advised him to kneel to me

(followed by many other professional athletes, high school athletes, an active duty Navy sailor, marching band members, and

You must be able to relate it to you audience!- students right here at HSU (below is A screenshot of Kaepernick’s official Twitter account.

Start by brainstorming Arguments in support and in opposition to your topic

Arguments in support of Kaepernick

He is standing to create widespread attention/dialogue for a very important issue

He is using his fame responsibly to promote an issue- as many athletes , actors, other famous people often do

His actions are an appropriate peaceful protest

He is behaving respectfully

Arguments against Kaepernick

It’s disrespectful for the sacrifices of those who served, fought, died for our right to free speech

This is an inappropriate/ineffective way to protect

It is abuse of his notoriety of as an NFL player (taking advantage of his privileged position making 19 mil/year)

It goes against the unity of his team – It creates division among out nation

(you’ll likely find more terms once you’re in the library database search)

go to library http://library.humboldt.edu/

search & locate, articles & databases, by subject or Academic Search Premier (HTML Full Text/PDF, or Find it@HSU) Note “subjects” or more key words

As you search for information copy and paste information you find along with the source, so you can find it again (and create a working bibliography as you go!)

Organize the information clearly separated into Pros and Cons

Reasons order (two main points 1. reasons in support/pro and 2. Reasons against/con)

I. There are many reasons people support Colin Kaepernick’s decision to sit (and then kneel) during the national anthem

1. The U.S. not living up to it’s promise of freedom, liberty and justice for all

a. Colin Kaepernick said, "I'm not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color... To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."

b. Denver Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall, who also has knelt during the national anthem, said, "the message is I'm against social injustice... I'm not against the military or police or America at all."

2. High visibility people can force others to pay attention and prompt discussion on important issues

a. According to CNN, President Obama said "But I don't doubt his sincerity. I think he cares about some real, legitimate issues that need to be talked about and if nothing else what he's doing has generated more conversation around some topics that need to be talked about." (http://www.cnn.com/2016/09/05/politics/barack-obama-colin-kaepernick/)

b. Kaepernick’s actions get people to listen to his reasons for declining to stand, among them his belief that his country continues to oppress its African-American citizens. ("This country stands for freedom, liberty and justice for all," Kaepernick said. "And that's not happening for all right now.)" Gay, Jason. Wall Street Journal, Eastern edition [New York, N.Y] 08 Sep 2016: D.6.

c. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell originally disagreed with those actions, but later praised what he called a movement from protest to progress: "I truly respect our players wanting to speak out and change the community... We want them to use that voice." (Tom Pelissero, "Roger Goodell Praises Player Demonstrations for Going from 'Protests to Progress," usatoday.com, Sep. 19, 2016)

d. "To be honest with you, I took offense to it," Niners center Daniel Kilgore said of Kaepernick's protest. "But after Kap stating his case today, and seeing where he was coming from, I do stand with Kap when he says enough is enough against crime and the violence, discrimination and racism . . . I'm going to stand every time. I'm going to think about honor and those who are fighting and who have fought, my family members, my friends. If Kap decides not to, that's his decision." Gay, Jason. Wall Street Journal, Eastern edition [New York, N.Y] 08 Sep 2016: D.6.

e. Make no mistake, Kaepernick is still protesting the police killings of black men. But by kneeling this past week instead of sitting down when the national anthem was played before a preseason game, he has signaled that he is open to listening to others. (Christian Science Monitor. 9/5/2016, pN.PAG. 0p.)

3. Not standing is a form of Peaceful Protest, a demonstration of 1st Amendment Rights

a. Veterans for Kaepernick, "An Open Letter of Support for Colin Kaepernick from American Military Veterans," A letter signed by 35 US veterans stated that "Far from disrespecting our troops, there is no finer form of appreciation for our sacrifice than for Americans to enthusiastically exercise their freedom of speech.",

i. Don't use my service--or that of any veteran--to justify the silencing of black Americans. Not on my watch. #VeteransForKaepernick (http://www.cnn.com/2016/08/31/us/veterans-for-kaepernick-trnd/

b. American was built on independent thinking and freedom- If the American forefathers did not stand up against what they believed to be wrong, the American Revolution might never have happened and we’d a British colony.

c. “Jacks With Kaepernick” HSU student Malcolm Chanaiwa organized a silent protest to sit during the anthem at the HSU football game. “It shows a continuity between the consciousness and the awareness and activity of people like Colin Kaepernick and the consciousness and the awareness and activity of the students who are here (at HSU),” Chanaiwa said.

4. Not standing may be against NBA rules, but the league seems to have chosen not to discipline any players for silent protest- which can be interpreted as support

a. In its rule book, the N.B.A. requires players, coaches and trainers "to stand and line up in a dignified posture along the sidelines or on the foul line" during the national anthem. But it is unlikely that the league would discipline any players who engage in a silent protest. Last week, every player on the W.N.B.A.'s Indiana Fever took a knee – as Kaepernick did -- and linked arms during the anthem before a playoff game against the Phoenix Mercury. No players were punished. Cacciola, Scott. New York Times, Late Edition (East Coast) [New York, N.Y] 27 Sep 2016: B.11.

II. There are many reasons people oppose Colin Kaepernick’s decision to sit (and then kneel) during the national anthem

1. Shows disrespect for the flag and members of the armed forces who risked their lives, been injured or died defending the US

a. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints quarterback, supported Kaepernick's message but disagreed with the delivery: "[I]t's an oxymoron that you're sitting down, disrespecting that flag that has given you the freedom to speak out." (Mike Triplett, "Drew Brees 'Wholeheartedly' Disagrees with Colin Kaepernick's Method of Protest, espn.com, Aug. 29, 2016)

b. Tomi Lahren, on redstatewatcher.com and theblaze.com (her arguments and emotionally charged and

i. “Flag not symbols of black American, white American, brown American or purple America for that matter, there are patriots of every race who have fought and died for this country and we honor the flag and sing the anthem as a reminder (of our honor for them)”

ii. Our country is not perfect but what is YOUR contribution, “sitting there like a fool?” what is your message to black children and people of color? To parade around with a chip on your shoulder like a victim?

2. It is not an effective or productive way to promote the cause

a. Clemson University football coach Dabo Swinney said in a press conference: "I don't think it's good to be a distraction to your team. I don't think it's good to use your team as the platform."

b. Malcolm Jenkins, safety for the Philadelphia Eagles, supported Kaepernick's message but said, "My grandfather served [in the military]. And this is a country that I love. So, me not standing for the national anthem isn't really going to get me the results that I want." (Ryan Wilson, "NFL Players: There Are Better Ways for Kaepernick to Affect Change," cbssports.com, Aug. 29, 2016)

c. Independent Journal Review asked veterans about Kaepernick's comments. Dorian Majied, an Army Ranger veteran who served in Iraq. "To disrespect the country that has afforded him the opportunities and fortunes he acquired is only made more offensive by the fact that his life is the personification of the ideals I see in the American flag and National Anthem: a biracial child, raised by white parents, and who has accomplished much despite his "oppression." In how many more nations around the world can a story like that come to fruition? There are so many other ways he could protest- Doing what Dwayne Wade and company did at a game opener to support BLM, or making a public verbal statement as Carmelo Anthony did, or even a written statement as Michael Jordan did are all more appropriate acts of protest. He could write his congressman, he could petition, he could picket, he could join the service and actually fight for the rights he seems to think are not offered to him; his sitting through the National Anthem was a lazy lack of will and brain power." He protested the wrong symbols of America, the American Flag and National Anthem represent the highest of American Ideals not the lowest of Ideals

d.

3. It creates anger & increases the divisiveness in our country

a. Facebook fan burned Kaepernick’s jersey with caption, "He says he's oppressed making $126 million. Well, Colin, here's my salute to you."

b. Santa Clara Police Union Threaten Boycott of 49ers Games Over Kaepernick Protest, (Police Chief Calls for Safety)

i. The Santa Clara Police Department, the lead police agency at Levi’s Stadium. During 49er games, around 70 officers are security personnel. Officers are angered by Kaepernick's comments about police brutality and accusations that officers "murder minorities." "The 49ers are allowing this to come out from an employee and it's making for a hostile work environment for us at the stadium," Frank Saunders, president of the Santa Clara Police Officers Association, said. The union stated its board of directors have "a duty to protect its members and work to make all of their workings environments free of harassing behavior." (http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/Santa-Clara-Police-Officers-Association-May-Boycott-Working-49ers-Games-392214541.html#ixzz4LUkrpz4o)

c. The Santa Clara Police Officers' Association, rescinded threat to not work 49ers home games because of quarterback Kaepernick's protest, and Santa Clara mayor Lisa Gillmor, said the union “will encourage our officers to work 49ers games" but added that they were "disappointed" in the 49ers management for ignoring concerns created by Kaepernick. "If they can defend the free speech right of one of their players certainly they can acknowledge the unfortunate harm that may be inflicted upon the good men and women of our department who also work at the stadium," the statement for the union said. Sports Illustrated (http://www.si.com/nfl/2016/09/09/colin-kaepernick-santa-clara-police-boycott-rescinded)

d. For Pt Counter Pt- The 49ers team's foundation will donate $1 million to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation and the San Francisco Foundation to help improve "racial and economic inequality and fostering communication and collaboration between law enforcement and the communities they serve here in the Bay Area." (http://www.49ers.com/news/article-2/Statement-from-49ers-CEO-Jed-York/e2199ba8-0bd0-48ab-8f28-8de91a1d5cb0)

4. He should be thankful to this country for all he has received, not angry for how he feels mistreated

a. I feel very bad for Colin Kaepernick that he has to live in a country he has such disdain for. I wonder if this is the same country that afforded him a free college education, that then allowed him the opportunity to play in the NFL and make almost $12 million this year, even if he doesn't play a down? I wonder if he is using any of his $12 million to help any of those he feels are oppressed? Maybe he should talk with the parents, spouses and children of those who gave their lives so he could sit on the bench and disrespect the country he lives in -- the only country in the world that would allow this. Al Tamberelli, Stand up, there are other ways to protest racism USA Today, 07347456, AUG 30, 2016, Academic Search Premier

You could also address it with a Pt Counter Pt structure:

I. Lets consider whether or not Kaepernick shows disrespectful for all those who have served in the military

A. Pro- It does not show disrespect

a. Veterans for Kaepernick, "An Open Letter of Support for Colin Kaepernick from American Military Veterans," A letter signed by 35 US veterans stated that "Far from disrespecting our troops, there is no finer form of appreciation for our sacrifice than for Americans to enthusiastically exercise their freedom of speech."

i. Don't use my service--or that of any veteran--to justify the silencing of black Americans. Not on my watch. #VeteransForKaepernick

b. Here’s strong examples of a person who thought this through and then decided to support Kaepernick : "To be honest with you, I took offense to it," Niners center Daniel Kilgore said of Kaepernick's protest. Wall Street Journal, Eastern edition [New York, N.Y] 08 Sep 2016: D.6.

c. American was built on independent thinking and freedom “Another seemingly obvious truth that Kaepernick's critics can't seem to grasp is this: If their beloved “forefathers” of the U.S. possessed the same passivity and blind allegiance to authority that they want from men like Kaepernick, the American Revolution never would have happened. The country they know and love might still be essentially a British colony.” (http://muslimmatters.org/2016/08/30/the-american-muslim-community-is-inextricably-linked-to-kaepernicks-protest/)

B. Con- His behavior IS disrespectful.

iii. Independent Journal Review asked veterans think about Kaepernick's comments. We talked to Dorian Majied, an Army Ranger veteran who served in Iraq. "To disrespect the country that has afforded him the opportunities and fortunes he acquired is only made more offensive by the fact that his life is the personification of the ideals I see in the American flag and National Anthem: a biracial child, raised by white parents, and who has accomplished much despite his "oppression." II. Let’s consider whether or not Kaepernicks use of his 1st Amendment right has had a positive effect

a. Pro- It is an effective and responsible way to raise awareness

i. According to CNN, President Obama said "But I don't doubt his sincerity. I think he cares about some real, legitimate issues that need to be talked about and if nothing else what he's doing has generated more conversation around some topics that need to be talked about." (http://www.cnn.com/2016/09/05/politics/barack-obama-colin-kaepernick/)

ii. 19, 2016)

b. Con- It increases divisiveness and it is an inappropriate use of his notoriety

i. Clemson University football coach Dabo Swinney said in a press conference: "I don't think it's good to be a distraction to your team. I don't think it's good to use your team as the platform."

ii. The Santa Clara Police Department Officers are angered by Kaepernick's comments about police brutality and accusations that officers "murder minorities." Transition (w/ an internal review) Now that we’ve considered 1. Whether or not Kaepernick has been disrespectful to those who sacrificed for out nation by serving in the military and 2. whether or not Kaepernicks use of his 1st Amendment right has had a positive effect, Let’s finally

III. Consider whether or not people feel Kaepernick is justified to fight this fight in this way

a. Pro- He has dealt with racial bias personally, it is EVERYone’s responsibility to protest injustice

i. Nate Boyer, a former Green Beret and NFL longsnapper showed his support and has even stood by him during the National Anthem supporting his decision to protest- ““I’m not judging you for standing up for what you believe in. It’s your inalienable right. What you are doing takes a lot of courage, and I’d be lying if I said I knew what it was like to walk around in your shoes. I’ve never had to deal with prejudice because of the color of my skin, and for me to say I can relate to what you’ve gone through is as ignorant as someone who’s never been in a combat zone telling me they understand what it’s like to go to war,”

ii. He does appreciate the opportunities afforded to him by the US and the NFL and will donate the first million of his $11.9 million salary for this season to charitable organizations that will address racial injustices (Witz, Billy. New York Times , Late Edition (East Coast) [New York, N.Y] 02 Sep 2016: B.11.)

b. Con- he has received incredible advantages in this nation and is in no position to show such disrespect and ungratefulness

i. “I feel very bad for Colin Kaepernick that he has to live in a country he has such disdain for. I wonder if this is the same country that afforded him a free college education, that then allowed him the opportunity to play in the NFL and make almost $12 million this year, even if he doesn't play a down? I wonder if he is using any of his $12 million to help any of those he feels are oppressed? Maybe he should talk with the parents, spouses and children of those who gave their lives so he could sit on the bench and disrespect the country he lives in -- the only country in the world that would allow this.” Al Tamberelli, Stand up, there are other ways to protest racism USA Today, 07347456, AUG 30, 2016, Academic Search Premier-

ii. The NFL has create a strong tie with military support and patriotism and he is wrong to use the forum for his protest against the National Anthem. As a heckler commented he won't have football to interfere with his activism much longer (Witz, Billy. New York Times, Late Edition (East Coast) [New York, N.Y] 02 Sep 2016: B.11.

iii. Tomi Lahren, from theblaze.com “Our country is not perfect but what is YOUR contribution, “sitting there like a fool?” What is your message to black children and people of color? To parade around with a chip on your shoulder like a victim? (emotionally charged but representative of the thoughts of many.

ONCE you have your body someone organized you can work on the intro and conclusion (be looking for material the whole time you are doing your research!)

Intro- attention getter, relate to audience, establish your cred, and preview your points and structure

Conclusion- signal the end, review your main points, reinforce your central idea (so much racial violence, frequency of unarmed black people being killed by police, protest and marches happening all over our country, we are in the midst of a social justice issue that will not likely be resolved soon), impact ending - we need a balanced perspective and to make well educated decisions about the best way to proceed

Possible ending would be with a quote that supports both sides: Pro- Kaepernick says of his choice to kneel for the Anthem “I have to stand up for people that are oppressed”. . . knowing full well there could be a political price to pay he says“If they take football away, my endorsements from me, I know that I stood up for what is right.”

Con- Dorian Majied, an Army Ranger veteran “I'm not ignoring that there are still issues with race in America. However, he is ignoring the positive ideals of America that every colored person who has ever served, fought—while some died—for, by refusing to stand. Proper action is exactly that, action, not the inaction of not standing because he couldn't think of a better way to protest. He was wrong in his delivery and protested the wrong symbols of America. The American flag and National Anthem represent the highest of American ideals, not the lowest ideals."

OTHER notes on what I found doing this research

In searching for solid arguments on both sides I also found 100% false arguments and fallacies-

Ad Homonym (attacking the person) “he has such distain for our country” – he is very clear

LIES- BE CAREFUL CRITICAL of what you hear/read!

When I search arguments on both side I came across a recurring con argument, which sounded very suspicious I went to Snopes.com to see what they had to say – it is completely false

https://conservativedailypost.com/colin-kaepernick-converted-to-islam-before-his-anti-american-stance-coincidence/ Excellent example of why you need to use a credible source! You can support ANY argument, even complete LIES with internet sources

http://www.snopes.com/images/red.gif FALSE

ORIGIN:Shortly after NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick made national headlines in August 2016 by refusing to stand for the playing of the U.S. national anthem, several fringe web sites published articles claiming that the actual reason behind his protest was that he recently converted to Islam:

This is completely unsupported.

Messages claiming that Kaepernick had converted to Islam were frequently attached to one of two photographs. The images are FAKE created by adding Kaepernick's face over a photograph of Osama bin Laden, and adding an Islamic symbol to a photograph of Kaepernick.

kaepernick collage kaepernick collage 2 http://www.snopes.com/colin-kaepernick-converts-to-islam/ illustration of doctored pictures

Dozens of fringe web sites published it, but ALL of these reports stemmed back to an anonymous tip posted by the sports gossip site Terez Owens in July 2015, and it is completely unsupported.

Kaepernick has not announced this alleged conversion, and has not mention religion while discussing his decision to remain seated

This is SO unethical, and yet all over the internet!

1. It is a completely unsupported lie

2. It perpetuates hatred and fear of all who are different- Islamophobia, homophobia, xenophobia, racism, ethnocentrism, chauvinism and more

3. You must always be a critical thinker!
