Situation:
Last year you got a job teaching at the local college's BSN program. The semester has been going well, but one of the students has been late on many of their assignments, missed 4 out of 10 quizzes, and has been late to class 3 times in the last 4 weeks, absent twice since the semester started. Last Wednesday after class, you asked this student to stay after class and talk about what is happening. The student is always ready for discussions in class, performed well in an other class you had them in last semester, but their performance this semester is putting them at risk of failing the course and not graduating at the end of the term! Here is the student's response:
"Thank you for caring to ask about what is happening to me, its been a rough semester. Because of the pandemic, I've been stuck doing extra hours at the clinic I work at while still helping to care for my kids, and keep up with school. Thankfully, my mom is helping with the kids and my ex-spouse has stepped up to help, even though we are going through a messy divorce. Additionally, I'm not sure if you remember, I have a disability that wares me out a bit, and forces me to need rest periods, sometimes I can't even make it to the car to come to school because I'm so exhausted. I'm just trying to muscle through to the end of the term so I can graduate and move on with my life and career!"
As a concerned instructor, you speak with your supervisor and the College Disability Office. They both advise you that since the student has accommodations for excused absences/Tardiness, make-up exams and extra time for tests, you should be as flexible as you can with them. Although the students needs are slightly beyond what they are legally entitled to, you are given support to go beyond your minimum compliance obligation and be flexible with this student since they have a 3.9 GPA, 10 years of experience as an RN, are going through an intense personal situation, and are working at a very busy clinic during the current medical crisis.
The student is asking to be allowed to submit their late assignments without penalty(they have all already been discussed in class and feedback has been given to the class), make up all the missed quizzes(all the quizzes have been given back to the class with the right answers so students can use them to prep for the final), and not be penalized for their absences and tardiness.
