The early stages of our life often shape who we ultimately become. During infancy, Freud explains the influence that ego development has over body image later in life. "As the ego develops, so does an awareness of one’s body. During primary process, the infant normally transfers libidinal instincts onto others. If, however, the libidinal attachment is to the ego, narcissism (self-love) may occur. Although narcissism is normal in infancy, the libido becomes transferred to other people (objects) in normal development. Conversely, if normal infantile narcissism does not occur, the child may become ambivalent about his or her own body. Primitive body images from early developmental stages may later result in self-destructive behavior as an adult" (Robbins, Chatterjee, & Canda, 2012). This can greatly affect a person's social/emotional well-being later in llife. Negative self body image can distort a person's perceptions about themselves physically and psychologically. They could develop mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, Body Dismorphic Disorder, etc. A person could be self-conscious and try to obtain self-worth through risky behaviors as well. For the most part I do find these psychodynamic theories to be consistent with social work practice. Understanding the root of the issue will only help social workers make the connections they need to effectively assist their clients.

RE: Discussion - Week 7
Experiences in infancy according to psycho dynamic theories may shape an infants future in relationships and social and emotional functioning as an adult. Some theories suggest the infant at an early age must have to ability to trust or this may cause him/her to become fearful as an adult later in life. Infants cry due to wanting a basic need taken care of, for example wet diaper, tummy ache, hungry, or attention/love and affection(Robbins, Chatterjee,& Canda,2012, PP 213-218).
I favor Erik Erikson's Eight Ages of Man in his first stage Erikson believes in the first stage basic trust versus basic mistrust: While in the first year of life the child is dependent on the mother or others for basic needs. If this infants care giver has nurtured the baby properly than a successful resolution will lead to a lasting ego quality of hope. There will be a belief wishes will be for fulfilled (Robbins, Chatterjee,& Canda,2012, PP 213-218).
Stage two occurs at two to three years old when the child will learn a sense of autonomy through retention and elimination of urine and feces. During this stage the child will emerge a sense of autonomy and pride and lasting ego quality of will power the determination to use free choice. Stage three initiative versus guilt during the ages of three to five the child will be at the play age. The child will be walking, running, playing. The proper resolution of this stage will lead to a lasting ego quality of purpose the courage to pursue goals if the child has developed properly. Erikson's stages go on until the eighth stage and if all have been properly met Erikson believes the individual will be successful in life with no despair (Robbins, Chatterjee,& Canda,2012, PP 213-218).
These theories are consistent with social work values because a social worker has to go through stages with their own client. Example would be you have assess your client needs and get your client to trust you, work with the client on building self esteem, assist the client on accomplishing goals on their own, be part of the clients educational and resource system. These theories are consistent because we as social workers are like the nurturing of our clients we have to make sure our clients are properly addressed and on the right path for success(Robbins, Chatterjee,& Canda,2012, PP 213-218).

It is important to identify internal and external barriers of the client and social worker because these barriers could prevent the treatment to work with the client. External barriers are issues that revolve from the client and internal barriers are from within the therapist (Geller & Greenberg, 2012). As a case manager for a mental health agency I have experienced these barriers many times already. I have had difficult clients to work with who have called me worthless and every name in the book yet I have overcome that and formed a trusting relationship with that client. The key is to not give up and to work on building trust. For Helen and the social worker there seems to be a lack of trust as Helen questions the social workers age and ability. This is an external barrier for the social worker but could also be considered an internal if she was not confident enough in herself. The intern can overcome this through time as she shows Helen through actions that she is competent in her position. I have had this happen to me as well. I have had a client state that I was young and could not ever understand or help her. For this I just explained that yes, I am young but I am still able to use my knowledge to help her and that she would find out over time. Another internal stressor could be lack of self-care (Geler & Greenberg, 2012). As social workers work long hours with difficult cases they can become overly stressed and get burnt out easily. This could cause a problem with the therapeutic relationship with the client if they feel that they are not getting the social worker's best effort. Many issues can arise while working with client's, it is the social worker and the clients job to work on building that foundation and rapport to help in the treatment and end result.

Both internal and external barriers represent potential impediments in the therapeutic relationship. Internal challenges range from the therapists’ handling of their own emotions, to the inability to focus on the client due to thoughts racing through their mind. External obstacles could be generated by the both the therapist and client’s personalities, Geller & Greenberg (2012). Some of these barriers were seen in the interaction between Helen and the intern.
Observable in the video, it is easy to see (and understand) Helen’s sense of frustration over the situation with Magda, Plummer, Makris & Brocksen (2014a). Helen is clearly overwhelmed and looking for a place to aim those feelings. Questioning the age of the intern would imply that the intern was too young to understand what she, Helen, was experiencing. Thusly, also too young to be trusted to add value to the situation.
At this point, the intern is probably feeling vulnerable, anxious, and a bit uncomfortable, which is an internal barrier. Yet this is part of her learning process. One way of overcoming this type of barrier would be asking the client something like “what do you think you ought to do”? This puts the ownership where it rightly belongs, on them.

If I were Helen's social worker and she were treating me the way she was the intern I would take a moment to reflect on my actions and past advice I had given her. I would try to examine what I did wrong and what I did right and confront these things to Helen so that she were to respect me as a professional. I would feel hurt and somewhat incompetent as she was yelling at me because I am not as confident in my actions as a social worker as a student. It would be easy to remain professional as I would keep a straight face and try to empathize with my client. This would show that I am trying to understand how she feels. Sometimes if anxious or upset this can signal that we need a break (Geller & Greenberg, 2012). If I feel that the client is too upset I may ask them to step out and cool down. I do not feel self-disclosure should be used often as a therapist but there are some moments when it could be used. Self-disclosure is one of the most controversial interventions for a therapist (Hill & Knox, 2001). In this situation one could use self-disclosure to assure Helen of their educational background and training along with other experiences. If Helen is aware of the intern's education she may feel better about her work.

Identifying internal and external barriers will help the social worker address those barriers to be more effective when working with clients. For example, communication can be a barrier. When Helen asked the intern her age, she immediately appeared to be offensive when she said, “Excuse me” with a strong voice, which led to Helen becoming more intense. Another barrier is assuming that clients think as you do (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2012). Both Helen and the intern viewed the conversation they had regarding Helen’s son caring for his grandmother differently. In Helen’s opinion she felt the intern encouraged her to allow her son to care for his grandmother, however, the intern responded with a different answer instead of understanding how Helen could have believed the intern encouraged her into making that decision.
Another barrier is lack of knowledge of the culture and experiences specific groups with whom you are likely to work (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2012). The Intern was not familiar if Helen’s culture, which is important in social work to be culturally competent. Another barrier is the tendency to assume that words mean the same thing to everyone (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2012). To overcome these barriers, the intern needed to be more culturally competent by learning Helen’s culture prior to meeting with her. Although, this does not mean that all people of Helen’s culture have the same behaviors, but it is important for the intern to be more knowledgeable of Helen’s culture. The intern needs to recognize her own biases to ensure those biases do not affect how she helps Helen.
