Read the article Fly-Girls, Bitches and Hoes: Notes of a Hip Hop Feminist by Joan Morgan, and answer the question below. Responses should develop a clear and coherent argument and provide evidence from the course’s lectures and readings to support your central claims. You should use all of the textual sources assigned for the course in your essay along with three or more from scholarly journals (no news articles or opinion pieces – reference Google Scholar, Jstor, etc.) You are encouraged to site lecture material, but please remember that lecture does not count as a textual source. Make sure that your papers do not simply summarize these materials, but that you critically evaluate the sources and arguments. Include your own opinion in the paper.

White supremacy is a central thematic preoccupation of African American history; but contemporary black feminist thinkers in the U.S. demonstrate that the problem of black liberation is not reducible to just the problem of race, but that race often intersects with other categories such as class, gender and sexuality. Throughout the course of the semester we’ve critically engaged the works of Kimberle Crenshaw, bell hooks, Audre Lorde and Patricia Hill Collins. Drawing from the information within the texts of these three scholars (and our class discussions on these texts), assess the themes addressed in Joan Morgan’s article on Black women and Hip Hop. (Some include mass incarceration, controlling images, mental health struggle disguised as machismo, etc.)
