White supremacy is a central thematic preoccupation of African American history; but contemporary black feminist thinkers in the U.S. demonstrate that the problem of black liberation is not reducible to just the problem of race, but that race often intersects with other categories such as class, gender and sexuality. Throughout the course of the semester we’ve critically engaged the works of Kimberle Crenshaw, bell hooks, Audre Lorde and Patricia Hill Collins. Drawing from the information within the texts of these three scholars (and our class discussions on these texts), assess the themes addressed in Joan Morgan’s article on Black women and Hip Hop. (Some include mass incarceration, controlling images, mental health struggle disguised as machismo, etc.)
