Graded Assignment Name: SCI303B/304B: Chemistry | Unit 1 | Lessons 6 and 7: Laboratory: Gas Laws Date: Graded Assignment Lab Report Question: How does a change in temperature affect the volume of a gas? How does pressure affect the volume of a gas? Hypothesis: Answer the question from your knowledge. Write these as if, then statements.(5 Points) If the temperature of a gas increases then the volume of the gas also increases Procedure Station 1 1. Blow up a balloon as shown in the tutorial. 2. Using the caliper, measure the circumference of the balloon. Record in Data Chart 3. Record the temperature of the room temperature and use the thermometer to record the temperature of the water. Record in Data Chart. 4. Place the balloon into the water, cover, set timer for 4 minutes. 5. After 4 minutes, remove balloon and remeasure. Record in Data Chart Station 2 6. Repeat steps 1 – 5 but with cool air in the container. Record measurements in Data Chart. Station 3 7. Attach the first balloon A below the funnel. Using spoon put 2 scoops of the antacid into the balloon, then add all of the vinegar. 8. Remove the balloon and measure the circumference with the caliper. Record in the Data Chart. 9. Repeat with 4 scoops of antacid and then 6 scoops of antacid, measuring after each time. © 2009 K12 Inc. All rights reserved. Copying or distributing without K12’s written consent is prohibited. When you have finished, submit this assignment to your teacher by the due date for full credit. Analysis Questions (10 points) 1. Consider all parts of the experiments that you have just performed. • What conclusions can you make about the relationship between the volume of a gas and its temperature? When pressure of a gas at constant temperature is increased the volume of a gas decreases • What conclusions can you make about the relationship between the volume of a gas and its pressure? When temperature increases volume of a gas also increases when pressure increases volume of gas decreases and visa versa • Were your hypotheses correct? Yes • Hand draw or use the computer to make 2 graphs to show the relationships between volume of a gas and temperature and the pressure of a gas and volume. Make sure that you put the variables correctly on the X & Y axis! © 2009 K12 Inc. All rights reserved. Copying or distributing without K12’s written consent is prohibited.
