Matthew Chandler
When I came into this course, I was not exactly sure what to expect. I knew the fact that it had community in the title told me that would be our focus. So, I knew immediately that would interest me as I plan to do a lot with local politics in the future. I knew that assessment would deal with grading or data regarding the community which in large would be used to find solutions. My career goals have not change I am passionate and motivate to impact the initiative to end the disparity in healthcare. This class enhanced my knowledge in this subject. Top two reasons to be involved in various organizations within my industry are to be networking and to have resources. I would choose ACHE as I have the qualifications and find it to be beneficial for my future endeavors.

- Compare your current knowledge with the knowledge you came into this course with concerning health assessment.
I wish I had understood the "why" behind CHNA before I was voluntold to be part of ours last year. Note to all share with everyone why we participate in a community health needs assessment and why our involvement is essential. Had I known why I would have put a lot more effort into my involvement? My bandwidth was stretched, and it was a nuisance.
- What are your career goals? How has this course helped you work toward those goals?
I am where I want to be in my career; I lead an incredible Human Resources team at a hospital. It is not necessarily so that I continue in health care;, if I go back to higher ed, the benefits and pay are better ????. One thing this course has helped me with besides understanding the why behind participating in a CHNA is the knowledge necessary to take the Certified in Healthcare Human Resources (CHHR) exam. This exam only has a little over 60% pass rate, so fingers crossed that I will be among those that pass (American Hospital Association, 2019).
I continue to work with my subordinates to help them develop to take my role if they want. Two out of my eight staff want my role; I work with them and help them achieve the knowledge and experience they will need to take over when I ride off into the sunset.
- What are the top two reasons for becoming involved in various organizations within your industry?
One reason to become involved in industry organizations is the networking possibilities. Sharing knowledge and information with your network helps everyone to strive for a better workplace. I am currently a member of the Michigan Hospital Association and have gained incredible insight from my peers as we work through this pandemic.
Another association I am a member of and find great information from is ACHE-American College of Healthcare Executives. I would like to become a fellow but need two more years in the healthcare industry before I can apply. I have the following requirements to become a fellow:
- Three years a member
- Master’s degree in Health Care Administration & Human Resources (2008)
- References
- Need two more years of healthcare experience
- 36 continuing education hours-ACHE (Face-to-Face education)
- Four volunteer activities healthcare-related
- Exam (American College Healthcare Executives, 2020).
- Which industry certifications or associations mentioned in the Industry Specific Certifications video would benefit you the most, and why?
Described in #2 and #3 shared the certifications and associations that I intend to follow and why. I am sure there are more, however, one thing at a time. I will finish this degree next week, as well as take the CHHR exam. I am on LinkedIn and follow many organizations that I find credible, and I believe it will help me round out my career in Human Resources.
