Marivette Bedoya
Disruptive innovation transforms and existing market or creates a new market by making processes simple and with easier improved access. A disruptive innovation is one that brings to market products and services that are much more affordable and with a much higher quality. The laser assisted surgeries is a good example of a disruptive innovation. It follows a very clear disruptive-innovation paradigm in that the skill has moved from an eye surgeon to a machine. While you still need a high-cost person to do a diagnosis, the bulk of the work has been completely routinized. Because people pay out of pocket, all of the providers and suppliers have to really think about the most cost-effective way to do things. If it doesn't represent good value to consumers, they won't spend the money on it (Shiel, 2020).
When you get to hip replacement, you enter interesting territory. Here much of the cost and skill, as it were, have also moved from the surgeon to the device. But because the procedure is generally covered by insurance and a surgeon is still involved, there have been no real cost pressures. What's interesting here is that U.S.-trained surgeons are beginning to do a lot of these in other countries, where the costs can be one-tenth of what they are here.

Retail Medical Clinics
Retail medical clinics are an example of a disruptive business model that is shaking up the hospital model and traditional doctor’s offices. Patients can go to retail clinics to get relief from common maladies, such as allergies and sinus infections, or receive routine vaccinations and blood tests. They are typically located in inaccessible areas with convenient opening hours for easy walk-in appointments (Moore, 2019).
What implications does it have on the healthcare environment?
Retail clinics are opening care to a wider market and disrupting longstanding service providers and incumbents in the healthcare industry.
How may this disruptive innovation impact each of the 5 Ps of healthcare marketing?
Marketing plays an important role in helping healthcare professionals to create, communicate, and provide value to their target market. Modern marketers start from customers rather than from products or services. They are more interested in building a sustainable relationship, than in ensuring a single transaction. Their aim is to create a high level of consumer satisfaction so that they return to the same supplier. Marketers have used many traditional methods that include marketing research, product design, distribution, pricing, advertising, promotional sales, and sales management. These methods need to be joined by new ones, related to new technology and new concepts, to attract customers through messages and offers (Davila, 2019).
