Avg. temp at camp 4 is 33F below base camp Calculation No Calculations Avg. base camp temp = (-7*(9/5))+32 = 19.4F Expected base camp temp = 19.4 - 10 = 9.4F Expected camp 4 temp = 9.4 – 33 = -26.4F Weather Challenge Continued • Using the Environmentalist and Photographer’s information, along with the shared information that the wind speed at base camp is 20% faster than normal you can calculate the expected wind speed at Camp 4 to be about 40 miles per hour. • Using the wind chill chart the Environmentalist has, the team can see that the -26F temperature combine with a 40mph wind equals a wind chill of -64F. • In these temperatures your team will get frost bit in under 5 minutes. • So, you should not attempt to move to Camp 4 in Round 3! Oxygen Challenge • • • • • • Role/Info All Shared: 18 hours from camp 4 to summit. 20 canisters for team. Environmentalist: Typical climbers use 2.5 Liters (L) O2 per minute. Personally uses 3.5 L per minute (L/min). Leader: 720 (L) per O2 canister. Personally only uses 1L per minute. Marathoner: Personally uses 3.5L/min for 16 hrs. 5L/min for 2 hrs. Photographer: Can’t share canisters.
