Individual Assignment M&Ms: Instructions
From your local grocery store or a convenience store, purchase two bags of 10.70oz (non-peanut) of M&M’s candies and mix them together to create one large sample. Use the worksheet in Minitab to report the following: 1. Colors: What colors did you find in your sample and how many candy units per color? 2. Defects: How many defects did you find? 3. Display a bar chart of the number of each color found in your sample 4. Display a Pareto chart of the number of defects found in your sample Note: Defects in M&M candies may be classified as “m” missing, chipped, broken, smashed, uncoated, misshapen, Peanut, twins, and misprint "m." In a word document, perform the following tasks and answer the following questions: 1. Copy and Paste your bar chart of color into the Word document and interpret the result. For example, what color did you find most frequently in your sample? 2. Copy and paste your Pareto chart of defects here and interpret the results. For example, what defect did you find most frequently? 3. What type of data is the color of a sample of candy? Why? 4. What type of data is the number of defects found in a sample of candy? Why? 5. What type of data is the weight of each M&M candy bag? Why? 6. What do you think the cause of the most frequent defect might be? 7. What quality tool would you recommend for analyzing and finding the cause of the most frequent defect? Why?
1. The blue color M&M is the most frequently in my sample.
2. The “Misprint M” is the most frequently defect among all defects.
3. The color of a sample of candy is text data because it’s letters and it’s a noun that represent the color of candy
4. The numbers of defects found in sample is a numeric data because it’s a value that show the amount of defects.
5. The weight of each M&M candy bag is also numeric data because it’s a number that show the weight value of each bag.
6. I think there are two reasons that cause the most frequent defect (Misprint M). It could be happened in production line due to the flaws of machinery. It could also cause by inappropriate storage and transport, store in high temperature or shaken in transportation can cause the misprint of M.
7. I think the cause-and-effect diagrams is the best tools for analyzing and finding the cause of the most frequent defect, because by this tool we can brainstorm the cause of defect and investigate various cause that influence a specific defect. In this case the “Misprint M” can be cause by different reason. So we can use the cause-and-effect diagrams to search which cause is the most related one and find the solution.
8. According to Rose (2014), Task manager used the check sheet to collect data that disclosed the true nature of the problem and provided a foundation of subsequent analysis and action. Thus, the role of check sheet is to help manager gather data of all causes and help them to determine possible solution to overcome or eliminate the causes.
