Transcription Project Requirements
To achieve a successful project experience and outcome, you are expected to meet the following requirements.
Start your introduction here. APA sixth edition does not use a heading title for the introduction because its position in the paper identifies it as the introduction. Open your paper with a foreword to introduce your case. Provide a general description of your selected case, a legend for the speakers (SC- for school counselor and, S - student) and any other presenting information that provides helpful context. Be sure to describe the student and conceptualize the topic in language that indicates your understanding of the student and the presenting issues. Base your conceptualization on theory.
The introduction should be a minimum of one paragraph. All paragraphs of your paper should be double-spaced. The margins in this template have been set to one inch on all sides, and the running head and automatic page numbering has been set up for your convenience. Remember to indent paragraphs in each section.
Do not consider this template to be the final word on writing your paper or APA style and formatting. Be sure to explore and consult the Lamar University Library and/or Writing Center – APA Style and Formatting
Section 2 – Transcription and Analysis
Use the transcription form included on this page for transcription. Suggested length: (minimum of 3 pages). The four column transcription form is described on the next page within the columns.
Verbatim Transcription
Skills and Competencies
Analysis of Critical Thinking
Evaluation of Counselor’s Response
Each row is for a different speaker's turn.
Column 1 – Verbatim Transcription: Transcribe a 15-minute segment of your counseling video verbatim—your words and the student’s words. You may also comment on silences, pauses, or relevant observations of body language. Use (S) to identify the student's words and behaviors, and use SC to identify the school counselor's words and behaviors. Do not use any names in the verbatim transcription.
Column 2 – Skills and Competencies ("What I did"): Identify skills and competencies you utilized during the session. These will come from the range of skills described and discussed in previous course material.
Column 3 –
Analysis of Critical Thinking column ("What I was thinking"): Analyze your reasoning for the exchange; provide a conceptualization based on a hypothesis that prompted either the student response or your response as the counselor.
Column 4 – Evaluation of Counselor's Response ("What I would do differently now"): Evaluate the effectiveness of the skill, competency, or statement utilized by you, the counselor. Note if you would change the content, delivery, or timing of your responses. Comment on what you could have said or done differently or on the value of what you did say or do. You may also provide analysis of your emotional responses or thoughts during the session.
Example: SC: I can see that you are upset
Acknowledged nonverbal behavior and reflected feeling
Noticing the student's affect is important to acknowledge my interest and concern.
Appropriate skill. Could have said, “It looks as though something is on your mind.” This would have given an opportunity for the student to share
Example: Student: Heck yeah!
