Angelo’s Pizza explores the importance of establishing human resource (HR) practices as its
organization expands. After success with one store, Angelo decides to open two new stores and
is considering opening more stores or franchising. At the same time, he wants to focus on serving
only high-quality fresh ingredients. However, the pizza joint experiences some HR challenges
including high turnover and other staffing problems. Many of the workers he has hired are
friends of the family. Some are going to college. Others are single parents. None of the workers
he has hired has any restaurant or cooking experience. They call in sick frequently. Joe, his most
valuable employee, threw his hands up in frustration and walked out. “You got to train these
bozos!” were Joe’s last words to Angelo as he threw his apron in the trash. Angelo consults you
for help with recruiting, selection, and hiring. Angelo believes he needs better recruitment and
selection practices, but he has a hard time saying no to family. To assist Angelo, please help him
with the following questions.

Question 2
JOB ANALYSIS AT GENESIS MOVING COMPANY
At Genesis Moving Company it is commonplace that workers will lift some objects as part of their
employment at least occasionally. Employees routinely pack and lift heavy items and some jobs
entail much more lifting on a regular basis that can cause workers to suffer injuries.
Rebecca is a 30-year-old woman who works for Genesis Movers Company a transportation and
logistics company as a packer. Responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to
driving a large box truck and moving furniture, boxes, and equipment for clients.
The job required her to lift sometimes over 100 pounds for which the company made available
lifting straps, back braces, lifting belts and hydraulic levers to reduce the impact of the weight and
the probability of injuries to workers. The problem the company faced was that employees did not
always have access to the equipment during the busy seasons when they were in high demand and,
they were not appropriately trained on how to use the equipment and posture their bodies to
minimise the chance of injury. To add to the problem, the workers were given new financial
incentives that rewarded the number of moves they completed within a certain timeframe but did
not take into consideration the safety of the methods they were using. As a result, movers were
doing jobs faster with greater results in the short term but suffered an increasing rate of injuries
that averaged 20% higher competing firms. The net result was that the company was losing the
benefit of some high performing staff members, namely Rebecca during the high season who were
off sick unexpectedly due to back and joint injuries. Staff morale was lower and additionally it
had to pay workers’ compensation for time off due to illness.
After discovering the challenge, it faced, the company must decide how to solve its workplace
injury challenges and identify the exact cause of the problems to minimise their occurrence.
Required
A. Explain the term ‘Job Analysis’ and indicate who should perform a Job Analysis. (4 marks)
B. Explain THREE (3) issues in the case that contributed to the increased rate of worker injuries. (6 marks)
C. As an employee in the company’s HR department, convince the company’s management of the need for Job Analysis by providing THREE (3) benefits and ONE (1) challenge.
(12 marks)
