Objective: M2O2 Analyze trends and causes of health disparities by completing the STAT-X Assignment. Goal: Research a health challenge and compare the nature and extent of it across four (4) groups and analyze potential contributing factors. Potential Resources: 1) Textbook 2) Scholarly articles 3) Credible organization or government sources 4) Research institutes Step 1: Identify one specific health challenge are you are interested in comparing across diverse groups. For example, obesity, breast cancer, diabetes, depression, premature births, etc.
Step 2: Identify four population groups who might show differences related to this health challenge. Population groups can differ by age, ethnicity, geographical location, or another unique cultural characteristic. Example: Breast cancer among Hispanic, Black, American Indian, and Native Alaskan ethnicities. Example: Depression among White-Low Income, White Middle-Class, Black Low-Income, and Black Middle-Class Americans. Example: Obesity across children, adolescents, middle-aged, and elderly populations. There are too many different health challenge and population combinations to list here. Be creative. Research something you are not familiar with and that is pertinent to your current or future profession. For example, if you are an EMT, perhaps heart attacks among White-Low Income, White Middle-Class, Black Low-Income, and Black MiddleClass Americans may be relevant.
Step 3: Research credible information regarding the health challenge you chose for each of the four groups. Look for statistical information regarding the prevalence of the health challenge among the four different groups. Be sure to only use sources from 2009 or later. For example, if you are researching anxiety among different ethnicities, you will need to research data related to the incidence of anxiety for each population group. Take careful notes and keep the information organized so you know what source provided each piece or set of information. Remember, you are researching the statistics related to the incidence of the challenge among groups. You need to find and use statistical data. You will use this information to analyze how that health challenge compares across four different cultural groups. You may be able to find the prevalence of the health challenge from one credible source or you may have to seek multiple sources to find out the prevalence rates for the four different groups. In other words, you may get lucky and find all the data you need from one source. However, it is more likely that you may need to find multiple sources to gather the data for each group.
Step 4: Develop a table that presents the health challenge and data you researched between the four (4) different cultural groups. Indicate the sources you obtained data from. List formatted references in the table. Make sure your references are in APA, MLA, etc format; any style is fine as long as they are neatly formatted. Do not copy and paste websites, as those must be formatted too. Health Challenge: Hypertension Group Prevalence Source Asian Americans 18% of population in 2014 Smith, A. (2015). Prevalence of Hypertension among diverse populations. American Nursing, (63)4, 118-191. Retrieved from http://ana.hypertension/data.org Black Americans 8% of population in 2014 Smith, A. (2015). Step 5: Write a summary of the results you compiled that are presented in the table. In other words, describe the table in narrative form. 1 + paragraphs (6-10 sentences per paragraph). In researching the data, you probably read additional information related to how the data was gathered, why it was gathered, and other related information. You may describe some of this information in this section. Step 6: Analyze causes of health disparity you researched. a. Write about what factors may cause difference rates of the health challenge across the groups you researched. The sources you used to gather information will likely have information related to causes. b. Describe how the group’s cultural characteristics may influence the development of that health challenge. Again, the sources you used may have information related to this or you may need to hypothesize on your own. c. How does the health care system influence (positively or negatively) the rate of the challenge across the groups? 2-3 paragraphs
Step 7: Synthesize solutions: This should include: a. How can individuals in the groups you researched improve their health to reduce or avoid incidence of the health challenge? b. What can health care organizations (who provide service delivery directly to individuals) help to reduce the health challenge, especially in populations with the highest rates? c. What can the government system (where the laws that influence access and quality of health services are created) do to help reduce the health challenge, especially in populations with the highest rates? 2-3 paragraphs **If a suggestion you make involves increasing federal or state funding to address disparities, be sure to also suggest where funding will come from. Assume the government does not have funding possible for it now, so describe how it could be collected.
Step 8: Conclusion. Write a conclusion to summarize your project findings and synthesis. 1-2 paragraphs
• Paragraphs are 6-10 sentences • You may single or double space your work, yet margins must be 1 inch all around. TNR font, 12 pt. • Page count depends on number of paragraphs and line spacing. Be sure to meet the paragraph requirements.
