Linear Algebra Poster Project

Poster Project

I want to give you an opportunity to see how some various aspects of linear algebra are used

outside of the classroom. In particular I would like you to explore the use of linear algebra in

video games. For this project you are responsible for submitting an academic poster by Monday

of Week 10 in the form of a pdf or PowerPoint file.

Before you begin to work on the poster itself please complete the following:

1) Read the article posted at http://blog.wolfire.com/2009/07/linear-algebra-for-game- developers-part-2/ describing the use of both dot products and cross products in video games.

2) Play an online video game (or a couple) for 15 - 20 minutes. You may play any game of your choice, or there is a list of suggestions on the next page.

After you have played some video games I would like you to address the following in a poster:

How did you see the following in your gaming experience (including but not limited to):

a) Vector addition / subtraction

b) Vector Multiplication

i) Dot product

ii) Cross product

The outline of the poster can be whatever you want, but here are some suggestions of sections

you may want to include:

1. An short introduction/background section on how video games/computers/linear algebra are used together. (This is mostly to give some context to the poster and does not need to

go into great detail, that’s what the rest of the poster is for.)

2. A short description/definition of the different types of vector operations (addition/multiplication), and the various video games you played, preferably in your

own words. You can think of this as you methods section or the details the reader needs

to make sense of your findings.

3. You ideas / results of how vector multiplication can be used in video games in general. Describe your gaming experience and how vector addition and multiplication might have

specifically come into play (screen shots welcome and encouraged).

4. Lastly, you might want to include a discussion section on if (and how) the blog posting aided in your understanding vector multiplication AND how this experience helped you

understand more about vectors specifically and linear algebra in general.
