6th Debate
Animals in Captivity, are zoos a viable environment to protect endangered species?
Today’s zoos serve as both a source of public education and public attraction, and, through protection and breeding programs as a way for us to ensure that populations of endangered animal species will not become extinct.
While there is no doubt that such programs demonstrate limited success (such as the great panda breeding program) we must also consider the fact that many of these animals born and raised in captivity can never be returned to their natural habitats.
Additionally there is a strong body of evidence that confirms that animals in captivity sufferfrom depression. Even the fact that animals in captivity are exposed to humans can be questioned from an ethical best practices perspective.
Recently a month-long strike by the employees at the Toronto Zoo for better wages and benefits attracted much public attention to this, the temporary closure of one of the GTA’s most treasured public attractions and natural educational venues, and aroused criticism of both its employees and the zoo’s management for endangering the animals’ care and wellbeing, despite the fact that management stated that it was taking care of the animals and they were ‘just fine’.
Debaters, consider and debate if zoos are a viable form of protection for endangered species. Pro will argue yes and give a full range of examples of successful zoos and global programs for zoos. Con will argue no and give examples of why zoos are inappropriate. Neutral will propose viable alternatives to the traditional zoo that will provide both protection for endangered species and the natural habitat that all species are entitled to.
