Purpose
The purpose of this assessment is to demonstrate group work planning that addresses the needs of a specific population group.
Assessment Process
Each student will plan a group work project using one of the following practice fields, or another in consultation with your lecturer*:
· Children and families
· Young people
· Mental health
· Disability
· People from diverse cultural backgrounds
· Refugees and asylum seekers
1. You are to describe this population group, research key needs of this group and 0020what is the current context of service provision for this group, e.g. hospital setting, community-based agency, private practice
2. Research the theories of group work practice and develop a detailed group work plan that address the key needs of your group and is structured to address the following:
o What is your target group and how will you invite participants into the group? Considerations should include: composition, size, meeting frequency, venue and communication.
o What type of group work is most appropriate for these service users?
o How will you determine the group aims?
o What form of group facilitation is most appropriate?
o What issues might arise and how will you address them?
o What are the potential ethical challenges of working with this group?
o Use critical reflection to examine your role as the identified facilitator of this planned group

2. Reference your group work plan with appropriate theories underpinning group work in this field of practice. In your response you are to reference to the AASW Code of Ethics and AASW Practice Standards, at least one of the core textbooks and social work theory.
3. Explain how your group work project will meet the needs of service users in this practice field and how it will help address some of the associated social issues for the service users.
*For this assignment you will assume the role of the facilitator. You will need to critically reflect on your personal power and privilge to assess the power dynamic for the group you have chosen.
