Reflection on Comparison and Contrast
Due at the start of class, in class, on Thursday, November 9, 2017
Length: 2 double-spaced pages
As discussed in class, literary reflection writing is an analytical practice in which the writer (you) recounts a real or imaginary scene, event, interaction, passing thought, and/or memory offered by a piece of literature, and adds a personal touch on the meaning of the item or incident, thought, feeling, emotion, or situation in his or her life. In other words, you are personally connecting, either directly or indirectly, to something you read.
Additionally, “comparison shows how two or more things are similar, and contrast shows how they are different. In most writing situations, however, the two related processes of comparison and contrast are used together” (369).
For your sixth reflection, you will choose to work with one of the following examples of comparison-and-contrast writing, as found in Chapter 11.
1) Bruce Catton’s “Grant and Lee: A Study in Contrasts.” P. 393.
2) Pamela Haag’s “Your Social Life: Are You a Fox or a Hedgehog?” P. 398.
3) Juan Williams’ “Songs of the Summer of 1963 … 2013.” P. 403.
4) Amy Chua’s “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior.” P. 408.
5) Ellen Laird’s “I’m Your Teacher, Not Your Internet-Service Provider.” P. 415.
When composing your reflection, be sure to first discuss the content of the story by proving that it is, indeed, an example of comparison and/or contrast writing. Possible areas of discussion include but are not limited to:
analogies within the story;
basis for comparison, as explained on page 371;
the story’s main idea;
subject-by-subject comparison and/or point-by-point comparison.
Then, write an excellent transition that moves you from the author’s words to your personal connection. How did this story remind you of yourself or someone you know, or remind you of something that is going on in your life or in the life of someone you know? Tell your story. Be creative!
