BACKGROUND: Good problem solving is information based. As was discussed briefly in class, the “information age” is upon us; but what does that really mean? One way to evaluate the meaning of “information age” is to scrutinize information as a resource based on data. Companies are treating information as a valuable resource. In 2017 organizations will spend billions of dollars storing, retrieving, and analyzing information in efforts to make better decisions which in turn return more to the bottom line. However, while data and information have characteristics that make them similar to other assets (office furniture, raw materials, cash, buildings, employees, etc.); information also has characteristics that make it unique as a resource!

ASSIGNMENT: You are to compose a 1 - 2 page paper on “Information as a Resource” using your experience from the Marble Market Exercise, your knowledge about business, and any other research you want to do.. This paper should be at least as much about Information as about the Marble Market.

An approach might be to briefly recap:

What did you learn, observe, or figure out, about data and “information” from experiencing the exercise?

What are some of the critical issues around creating information from data?

How did your information (data in perspective) change throughout the exercise?

What would you do different now that you have gone through the exercise once?

Then extrapolate how this might be applied to a real company, industry, or other entity. Remember the goal of this paper is to apply what you learned from the exercise.
