It's time to compare and contrast some papers to describe what makes a good literature review.
In this task, you will read three literature reviews from the journal ACM Computing Surveys, and reflect on what makes a good literature review, and how it helps a researcher.
You may download a PDF copy of the publications using ACM Digital Library.
Submit the following files to Doubtfire:
A PDF document with your reflections (300 words)
You can choose any three review articles from the journal ACM Computing Surveys. But if you're unsure which to choose, we recommended the following:
Searching the Web of Things: State of the Art, Challenges, and Solutions
A Taxonomy and Survey of Cloud Resource Orchestration Techniques
Connected Car: Technologies, Issues, Future Trends
Think about the following questions as you read each review:
what is the topic of the review? how is the research in the topic of the review organized and presented: is there a taxonomy, a roadmap or a timeline? how are the papers compared and contrasted? what are gaps or areas of future work suggested? did you learn much from the review?
Take note of what makes a good literature review. You could also read the articles this week to help you

In this task you will apply the Design Science Research Methodology (DSRM) to write a research proposal and solve a particular problem.
Submit the following files to Doubtfire:
A PDF document with your proposal (500 words)
Write a short research proposal (500 words) on an IT prototype system to solving one of the following problems, include at least four to five references in your proposal. Your proposal should, as much as possible, contain the components mentioned in the structure of a research proposal described earlier in this week, and do further research if necessary.
Choose ONE of the scenarios below:
Problem Scenario 1: People are concerned about kids potentially getting lost when going for an excursion to a large park in a city or a museum. People worry that they will wander away from a teacher or be kidnapped. A possible solution is based on RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology.
Problem Scenario 2: Elderly people can sometimes feel alone and vulnerable in their own home, and fear a fatal fall. You might consider seeing if the Internet of Things could help monitor elderly people.
Problem Scenario 3: Tremendous harm can come from the over-consumption of alcohol. While alcohol cannot be banned in many countries, there is a need to reduce the harm associated withe excessive consumption. Perhaps consider applying the potential of smartphone apps or devices.
While completing this task, you should think through and apply the steps in the DSRM methodology and consider the potential of IT interventions to deal with real-world concerns.

You will not be judged so much on the originality or technical content of your proposal but on how you apply the methodology and if the proposal has the recommended structure. Please read up on the Design Science Research Methodology this week to help you with this task.
While you may be able to think of a response to the problems described above that does not involve Information Technology, the point of the activity is to research and propose an IT based solution.
In this task you will investigate an aspect of research in industry IoT and report on your findings.

In this task, you can choose explore further an aspect of R&D in IoT, you can choose to do ONE of the following:

In this task, you are to choose a topic in IoT, and then find and read three research papers on the same topic, summarizing each of the three papers.
Submit the following files to Doubtfire:
A PDF document with your three summaries, one for each paper. Include a title for your topic (up to 20 words) and your three summaries (each preceded by the title of the paper), 120 words each (for title of paper and summary of paper) , a total of 380 words (=20+120x3), and a reference for each paper (words for references not included in the 380 word limit).
Which particular application domain of IoT was most interesting to you? Was it vineywards, shopping, bridge monitoring, health, or some other topic? Please read the articles on these application domains.
In this task, you are to choose an application domain, and then find and read three research papers on the application domain (or more narrowly, a topic within that application domain). For each paper, write a short summary of 120 words detailing (try to find published papers in the last two years):
aim and contribution of paper, including issues, problem being solved or concept being proposed,
describe solution to the problem, and experiments done, limitations, data obtained, and
the outcome.
Possible sources of research papers are these electronic databases:
IEEExplore digital library
scholar.google
ACM Digital library

depending on results; Use Deakin VPN from outside Deakin or access from within Deakin to get access to the above IEEE and ACM digital libraries.]
So you could search for papers using particular keywords in the databases above, or in specific journals.
For your particular field, normally there are particular journals or conference proceedings that are most relevant. For example, for IoT, this journal is particularly relevant (though there are many others):
IEEE IoT Journal
Provide a complete reference (as you would find in the references/blibliography section of a paper) for each paper you have chosen (words for the reference not counted in the 360 words).
For example, suppose your topic is "IoT for fall detection", and if you chose this paper by Gia et al., write 120 words on it and add its reference:
T. N. Gia et al., "IoT-based fall detection system with energy efficient sensor nodes," 2016 IEEE Nordic Circuits and Systems Conference (NORCAS), Copenhagen, 2016, pp. 1-6.
Do this for each of the three papers (say in the topic of fall detection) you chose.
http://iot-journal.weebly.com/
In this task you will write an analysis of three papers on a given topic, i.e., a literature review.
Submit the following files to Doubtfire:
A PDF document with your literature review (300 words)
Based on the three papers you have read and summarized, write a mini 300 word literature review of IoT in that chosen application domain, describing the work from the three papers as follows:
an introduction to the application domain
key concepts and ideas, obtained from the three papers
summarize, contrast, and compare the research done across the three papers (noting similartiies and differences in problem being addressed, approach taken, outcomes, technology used, pros and cons, etc) including experiments done (if any), results and limitations, advantages and disadvantages; trace the development of ideas across the three papers
a conclusion of key ideas and any ideas for future work in applying IoT in that domain
Note that this write-up is different from a mere list of three summaries you did previously - this task is an analysis, not just a summary, of the research in the three papers.
Note that a literature review typically has many more papers, depending on the topic of review, and would aim to cover as many papers in the area as possible, but this exercise is to provide practice in analyzing work on the same topic from three different perspectives (i.e., as represented by the three papers).

In this task, you are to find, download, install, and run an existing tool for developing the solution/idea/concept you defined in the previous task. Note that you need not develop the solution in this task but choose a tool for it.
Submit the following files to Doubtfire:
A screen shot of your program/tool running (ensure that the name of the tool is clear), or include it running a simple (e.g., "Hello World") example - to show that you have successfully installed the tool/framework
For this task, you need to find, download, install, and run an existing tool for developing the idea/solution/concept you defined in the previous task. You can use the platforms and tools introduced to you from IoT Frameworks/Platforms, course 2, week 2 and see a comprehensive comparison of the platforms here or watch the demo video of some of these platforms and the main features of them here, or conduct your own search. Upload a snapshot of the platform/tool when it is running.
The material in Course 2, Week 2 will help you with this task.
